Description & Operation
Transmission is a 4-speed overdrive, electronically controlled automatic transaxle. Transaxle consists of lock-up torque converter, oil pump, 3 planetary gear sets, clutch and brake units, valve body and 4 electronic valve body solenoids. Valve body with solenoids and Transaxle Control Module (TCM) are used for controlling transaxle operation. Solenoids are controlled by TCM.
TCM receives input signals from various areas to determine transaxle shift points and torque converter lock-up. Areas sending signals to TCM include mode selector switch, Traction Control System (TCS), Throttle Position (TP) sensor, input speed (RPM) sensor, output speed sensor, park/neutral position switch, Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) sensor, brake switch and kickdown switch.
Transaxle is equipped with a mode selector switch. Switch is used for normal, sport and winter driving conditions. Transaxle is also equipped with a shift-lock and starter interlock system. Shift-lock system prevents shift lever from being moved from "P" position unless brake pedal is applied. In case of malfunction, shift lever can be released by inserting small screwdriver in safety release next to selector lever on Saab models or insert ignition key in safety release next to selector lever on Daewoo models. Starter interlock system prevents power from being applied to starter circuit unless shift lever is in "P" or "N" position.
