Tilt Steering Column: Disassembly
- Remove steering column from vehicle. Remove steering wheel from steering column. Pull canceling cam spring from upper end of shaft assembly, if it has not been previously removed. Remove turn signal switch housing screws. Remove turn signal switch housing from steering column housing. Compress spring retainer and upper bearing spring with tilt lock plate adapter lock plate compressor J-23653-A. Remove retaining ring. See Fig 1 and Fig 2 .
- Remove spring retainer and upper bearing spring. Remove inner race seat and inner race. Pull tilt level on column housing assembly and tilt column all way up. Insert a Phillips screwdriver into square opening at bottom of spring retainer. Push and turn left to release spring retainer and wheel-tilt spring. Remove spring retainer and wheel-tilt spring. Remove two pivot pins using pivot pin remover J-21854-01. Place lock cylinder in ACC position. See Fig 3 -Fig 5 .
- Pull tilt lever to release column housing. Remove column housing and steering shaft from housing support. Remove shear bolts, shear bolt washers, and ignition switch housing from steering column housing as follows: See Fig 6

- Use a metal punch to start drill head.
- Drill off head of shear bolts down to steel shear bolt washers with a 6.5 mm (1/4".) drill bit.
- Separate washers and ignition switch housing from column housing.
- Remove threaded end of shear bolts from ignition switch housing with locking pliers.NOTE: After drilling and removing threaded end of shear bolts, all metal shavings must be cleaned from all parts.
- Remove lock cylinder from ignition switch housing by pushing lock cylinder release tab. Remove ignition switch retaining screw and remove ignition switch assembly. See Fig 8 .
- Remove steering shaft assembly from housing support. Remove tilt bumpers with a pair of pliers. Remove support screws and remove support housing from jacket assembly. See Fig 9 - Fig 11 .
