Standard Steering Column: Assembly

NOTE: All fasteners in following steps must be firmly seated before being tightened to specifications.
  1. Press in steering column housing bearing using remover/installer. Install retaining ring and washer. Connect column housing to jacket assembly. See Figure . Attach ignition switch housing to column housing with shear bolt washers and shear bolts. Tighten ignition switch housing shear bolts until bolt head separates from body, approximately 11 N.m (97 INCH lbs.).
  2. Place lock cylinder in ACC position. Slide steering shaft assembly into lower end of jacket assembly until steering shaft assembly is bottomed. Place lock cylinder in LOCK position and remove key. Rotate steering shaft until lock bolt engages and locks steering shaft in position.
  3. Install lower part of turn signal switch housing assembly, then install upper part of turn signal switch housing assembly. Install screws. Tighten turn signal switch housing screws to 3 N.m (27 INCH lbs.). Slide alignment bushing over lower end of steering shaft and into lower end of jacket assembly.
  4. Install thrust washer and upper steering shaft spring onto steering shaft. Install steering wheel onto steering column. Install steering column into vehicle.
    NOTE: After steering column is connected to coupling flange, pull alignment bushing away from jacket assembly and leave bushing on steering shaft for later use.
