Starter Motor: Assembly
- Clean all of starter motor parts, but do not use grease-dissolving solvents for cleaning armature and field coils. Lubricate gears with lubricant. If full disassembly of starter and solenoid was performed, begin reassembly by placing gear support on driveshaft assembly. See Fig 1
. Install drive and pinion stop on driveshaft. See Fig 2
. Install lock ring into groove on driveshaft and insert collar. See Fig 3
. Install needle bearing. Install shift lever assembly with plunger and boot. See Fig 4
. Lubricate gears with lubricant and install driveshaft assembly with bushing and washer on gear end. Install cushion and gears. See Fig 5
.
- Lubricate drive end of armature shaft with lubricant and install new gear and bearing, if necessary. Position solenoid assembly and return spring against plunger, applying sealer to solenoid flange. Fasten solenoid assembly with screws. Tighten starter solenoid assembly screws to 8 N.m (71 INCH lbs.). Install field coil connection to starter terminal. Install nut. Tighten starter field coil connector nut to 8 N.m (71 INCH lbs.).
- Position armature assembly into field frame. Place shield on armature and field frame assembly. Install armature and field frame assembly with shield into starter housing. Position commutator end frame/brush holder assembly, lining up end frame holes with through-bolt holes in housing. See Fig 6
. Install starter through-bolts. Install starter. Tighten starter through-bolts to 6 N.m (53 INCH lbs.).
