Steering Column: Installation

NOTE: For proper installation of steering column, be sure steering wheel spokes are centered diagonally and pointed downward, and that front wheels are in straight-ahead position.
  1. Place alignment bushing onto end of steering column shaft. Carefully guide steering shaft into steering shaft coupling flange.
    NOTE: Provide support for steering column assembly until mounting nuts are fastened. Do not let steering column assembly hang unsupported.
  2. Install pinch bolt into non-threaded hole of flange. Tighten coupling flange pinch bolt to 22 N.m (16 ft. lbs.). Slide alignment bushing into steering column housing. Install nut for rear bracket of steering column jacket assembly. Tighten steering column jacket assembly rear bracket nut to 22 N.m (16 ft. lbs.). See Figure .
  3. Install nuts for steering column jacket assembly front bracket. Tighten steering column jacket assembly front bracket nuts to 22 N.m (16 ft. lbs.). Connect ignition switch electrical connection. Install key reminder switch and key reminder switch screws. See Figure . Tighten key reminder switch screws to 2 N.m (18 INCH lbs.).
  4. Install key interlock solenoid and key interlock solenoid screws. See Figure . Tighten key interlock solenoid screws to 2 N.m (18 INCH lbs.). Connect airbag electrical connections. See Figure . Install lower instrument trim panel screws. Tighten lower instrument trim panel screws to 3 N.m (27 INCH lbs.).
  5. Install switch levers. Inspect steering wheel in a straight-ahead position. Connect negative battery cable. Install upper and lower steering column cover panels and screws. Tighten upper and lower steering column cover panel screws to 3 N.m (27 INCH lbs.).
