Removal And Installation: Fwd
REMOVAL
- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to TIRES AND WHEELS. REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Lock the steering wheel in the centered position.
- Remove the steering shaft to steering gear pinch fastener, and DISCARD the pinch fastener.
Do not start to remove (or break free) pinch fastener with an impact wrench/gun.
1 - Steering Gear Pinch Fastener 2 - Dash Panel Fastener - Remove the dash seal to dash panel fasteners.
- Remove both tie rod end nuts.
1 - Jam Nut 2 - Outer Tie Rod End 3 - Tie Rod End Nuts - Using ball joint remover (special tool #9360, Remover, Ball Joint), separate outer tie rod end from knuckle.
- Remove exhaust crossunder pipe. Refer to PIPE, EXHAUST CROSSUNDER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the front cradle. Refer to CROSSMEMBER, FRONT SUSPENSION, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
and/or CROSSMEMBER, STEERING GEAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
.NOTE:
DO NOT disconnect the torque sensor (grey) harness connector and make sure it is connected properly.
- Remove the heat shield from the steering gear, by removing the mounting fasteners.
1 - Mounting Fasteners 2 - Heat Shield - Remove the dash seal to steering gear fasteners, and remove the dash seal.
1 - Steering Gear Fasteners - Remove the bracket fasteners and remove the bracket.
1 - Bracket Fastener 2 - Bracket - Remove the steering gear to sub cradle fasteners, and remove the steering gear from the sub cradle.

INSTALLATION
Follow the removal procedure in reverse for general reassembly of the components on the vehicle. The steps listed below are calling out specific procedures that should be followed during installation.
- Position the steering gear to the sub cradle then install the steering gear to sub cradle fasteners and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the dash seal to steering gear fasteners and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Apply medium strength threadlocker to the studs before installing fasteners.
- Position the heat shield to the steering gear and install the heat shield to steering gear fasteners and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Tighten the trans mount fastener to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install both outer tie rod studs to the knuckles and install both tie rod end nuts and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the dash seal to dash panel fasteners and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Apply medium strength threadlocker to the fasteners.
- Install a NEW steering shaft to steering gear pinch fastener and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Perform a wheel alignment. Refer to WHEEL ALIGNMENT, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Perform the Electric Power Steering (EPS) verification test. Refer to EPS VERIFICATION TEST .
