Removal And Installation: AWD
REMOVAL
- Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.multimedia:A supplement to the article is available.
- Remove and DISCARD
the steering shaft to steering gear pinch fastener.
Do not start to remove (or break free) the pinch fastener with an impact wrench/gun.
1 - Steering Gear Pinch Fastener 2 - Dash Panel Fastener - Remove the dash seal to dash panel fasteners.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to TIRES AND WHEELS, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the belly pan. Refer to BELLY PAN, FRONT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the drive shaft. Refer to DRIVESHAFT, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the exhaust hanger.
1 - Exhaust Hanger 2 - Exhaust Pipe Clamp - Remove the exhaust pipe clamp and disengage the exhaust pipe.
- Remove the tie rods from the steering knuckles. Refer to TIE ROD, STEERING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the steering gear crossmember. Refer to CROSSMEMBER, STEERING GEAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
.NOTE:
DO NOT disconnect the torque sensor (grey) harness connector and make sure it is connected properly.
- Remove the heat shield to steering gear mounting fasteners and remove the heat shields.
1 - Steering Gear Mounting Fastener 2 - Steering Gear Mounting Fastener - Support the transmission with a suitable stand.
1 - Suitable Stand 2 - Transmission - Support the steering gear with a suitable strap and remove the steering gear bolts.
1 - Steering Gear Bolt - Remove the steering gear crossmember. Refer to CROSSMEMBER, STEERING GEAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Disconnect the Electric Power Steering (EPS) wire harness connectors.
1 - Wire Harness Connector 2 - Wire Harness Connector - Remove both stabilizer bar links and use a suitable strap to tie down the stabilizer bar to the control arm. Refer to LINK, STABILIZER BAR, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Remove the bracket fasteners and remove the bracket.
1 - Bracket Fastener - Remove the dash seal to steering gear fasteners and remove the dash seal.
1 - Steering Gear Fastener - Remove the steering gear.
- Remove the heat shield.
INSTALLATION
Follow the removal procedure in reverse for general reassembly of the components on the vehicle. The steps listed below are calling out specific procedures that should be followed during installation.
- The heat shield can only be installed to the engine compartment while the steering gear is removed.
- A suitable strap may aid in holding the steering gear in position.
- Install the dash seal to steering gear fasteners and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Apply medium strength threadlocker to the studs before installing the dash seal to steering gear fasteners.
- Install the steering gear bolts and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Position the heat shields to the steering gear then install the heat shield to steering gear fasteners and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the exhaust pipe clamp then tighten the cross-under pipe to exhaust pipe clamp to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install a NEW steering shaft to steering gear pinch fastener and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the dash seal to dash panel fasteners and tighten to the proper torque specifications. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Apply medium strength threadlocker to the dash seal to dash panel fasteners before installation.
- Perform the Electric Power Steering (EPS) verification test. Refer to EPS VERIFICATION TEST .
- Perform the wheel alignment standard procedure. Refer to WHEEL ALIGNMENT, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
