Air Bag, Side Curtain: Installation: Installation
To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.
To avoid serious or fatal injury when removing a deployed airbag, rubber gloves, eye protection, and a long-sleeved shirt should be worn. There may be deposits on the airbag unit and other interior surfaces. In large doses, these deposits may cause irritation to the skin and eyes.
To avoid serious or fatal injury, use extreme care to prevent any foreign material from entering the side curtain airbag, or becoming entrapped between the side curtain airbag cushion and the headliner. Failure to observe this warning could result in occupant injuries upon airbag deployment.
The following procedure is for replacement of an ineffective or damaged side curtain airbag (also known as Side AirBag Inflatable Curtain/SABIC). If the airbag is ineffective or damaged, but not deployed, review the recommended procedures for Handling Non-Deployed Supplemental Restraints. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE . If the side curtain airbag has been deployed, review the recommended procedures for Service After A Supplemental Restraint Deployment before removing the airbag from the vehicle. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
- Check to be certain that the box nuts and the airbag support bracket (5) for the side curtain airbag (4) are properly installed in the inner roof rail and that they are in good condition.
- Position the side curtain airbag into the vehicle as a unit.
- Align the snap-in fastener on the back of the side curtain airbag inflator with the hole in the inner roof rail above the B-pillar and push on the inflator firmly and evenly to snap it into place.
- Engage the plastic push-in fasteners (2) that secure the airbag cushion to the inner roof rail and the airbag support bracket behind the inflator and the B-pillar.
- Engage the T-hook that secures the end of each front and rear side curtain airbag tether into the slots in their respective inner A-pillar or C-pillar sheet metal.
- Engage the plastic push-in fasteners that secure the side curtain airbag front tether to the holes in the inner A-pillar.
- Engage the plastic push-in fasteners (2) that secure the front and rear side curtain airbag tether T-hooks in their inner A-pillar or C-pillar slots.
- Install and tighten the five screws (3) that secure the side curtain airbag to the inner roof rail and the airbag support bracket. Tighten the screws to 9 N.m (80 in. lbs.).
- Reconnect the body wire harness connector (1) to the side curtain airbag inflator connector receptacle.
- Reinstall the headliner onto the inner roof panel. Refer to HEADLINER, INSTALLATION .
- Reinstall both rear seat back bolsters into the vehicle. Refer to BOLSTER, SEAT, INSTALLATION .
- Reinstall the rear seat cushion into the vehicle. Refer to COVER, SEAT CUSHION, SECOND ROW, INSTALLATION .
- Do not reconnect the negative cable to the battery at this time. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Verification Test procedure should be performed following service of any SRS component. Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE .
