Shock Assembly: Removal
NOTE:
Before proceeding, (Refer to SUSPENSION/FRONT - WARNING) .
- Raise and support vehicle. (Refer toHOISTING in LUBRICATION & MAINTENANCE article).
- Remove the wheel and tire assembly. (Refer to TIRES/WHEELS - REMOVAL)
- If both shock assemblies are removed, mark the shock assemblies right and left according to which side of the vehicle they were removed from.
- Remove the wheel speed sensor cable routing bracket from the steering knuckle. See Fig 1.
1 - WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CABLE 2 - SPEED SENSOR CABLE ROUTING BRACKET 3 - STEERING KNUCKLE 4 - ATTACHING BOLT 5 - BRAKE CALIPER FLEX HOSE - Remove the nut from the upper ball joint stud.
- Remove the upper ball joint stud from the steering knuckle using Puller, Special Tool, C-3894-A. See Fig 2. Pull steering knuckle outward and position toward the rear of the front wheel opening.
1 - BALL JOINT 2 - BALL JOINT STUD 3 - SPECIAL TOOL C-3894-A 4 - SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY 5 - UPPER CONTROL ARM - Remove pinch bolt attaching shock absorber clevis to shock absorber. See Fig 3.
1 - SHOCK ABSORBER ASSEMBLY 2 - PINCH BOLT AND NUT 3 - WHEEL SPEED SENSOR CABLE 4 - BRAKE FLEX HOSE 5 - CLEVIS BRACKET 6 - STEERING KNUCKLE - Remove the nut and thru-bolt attaching the shock absorber clevis to the lower control arm. See Fig 4.
1 - TIE ROD 2 - LOWER CONTROL ARM 3 - SHOCK ABSORBER CLEVIS 4 - THRU-BOLT - Remove the clevis from the shock absorber by carefully tapping the clevis off the shock absorber using a soft (brass) drift.
- Remove the four bolts attaching the shock absorber/upper control arm mounting bracket to the shock tower of the vehicle. See Fig 5.
1 - SHOCK TOWER 2 - MOUNTING BOLTS - Remove the shock assembly from the vehicle through the front area of the wheel well.
