NOTE: Effective immediately all repairs on involved vehicles are to be performed according to this notification. Rapid Response Transmittal #06-005 is being cancelled.

NOTE: This notification applies only to the above vehicles equipped with Sentry Key Theft Deterrent System (sales code GXX) but without  Keyless Entry (sales code GXP, GXN, GXR or GXM) built through March 10, 2006 (MDH 031015)  .
IMPORTANT: Many of the above vehicles have had the revised software installed at the assembly plant and therefore have been excluded from this notification.
IMPORTANT: Some of the involved vehicles may be in dealer vehicle inventory. Dealers should complete this repair on these vehicles before retail delivery  . Dealers should also perform this repair on vehicles in for service. Involved vehicles can be determined by using the VIP inquiry process.

SUBJECT

The software programmed into the Wireless Control Module (WCM) on about 22,300 of the above vehicles may prevent the vehicle from starting under certain conditions.

REPAIR

The WCM control module must be reprogrammed.

PARTS INFORMATION

No parts are required to perform this service procedure.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Reprogram the WCM Control Module

NOTE: This procedure must be performed with release 6.05_SP4 or later. 6.05_SP4 release of StarSCAN® software can only be retrieved via the Internet. An update CD will not be sent to your dealership for this release. To update your StarSCAN® diagnostic tool via the internet, the StarSCAN® software must be at version 6.05 and properly configured to work with your dealership's network.
  1. Open the hood, install a battery charger and verify that the charging rate provides approximately 13.5 volts.
  2. Connect the CH9410 StarSCAN® ethernet cable to the StarSCAN and the dealer's network drop.
  3. Connect the CH9404 StarSCAN vehicle cable to the StarSCAN and the vehicle.
  4. Place the Ignition in the "RUN"  position, then Power "ON"  the StarSCAN.
  5. Retrieve the old WCM part number. With the StarSCAN on the "Home"  screen, follow the procedure below:
    1. Select "ECU View"  .
    2. Touch the screen to highlight "WCM"  in the list of modules.
    3. Select "More Options"  .
    4. Select "WCM Flash"  .
    5. Record the "Part Number"  displayed at the end of the "Resident flash file for" statement near the top of "Flash WCM"  screen for later reference.
  6. Download the flash file from the internet to the StarSCAN. With the StarSCAN on the "ECU Overview"  screen, follow the procedure below:
    1. Select "Browse for New File"  . Follow the on screen instructions.
    2. If the newly downloaded flash file "Part Number" description is the same as the number recorded in Step   e , then the WCM module is up to date and no further action is required. If the part number is different, continue with Step 6c. 
    3. Select "Download to Scantool"  .
    4. Select "Close"  after the download is complete, then select "Back"  .
    5. Highlight the listed calibration.
    6. Select "Update Controller"  and follow the on screen instructions.
    7. When the update is completed, select "OK"  .
  7. Disconnect the CH9404 StarSCAN vehicle cable from the vehicle. Wait until the StarScreen reads "Vehicle Disconnected", then press "OK"  .
  8. Reconnect the CH9404 StarSCAN vehicle cable to the vehicle.
  9. Retrieve the WCM part number. With the StarSCAN on the "Home"  screen, follow the procedure below:
    1. Select "ECU View"  .
    2. Touch the screen to highlight "WCM"  in the list of modules.
    3. Select "More Options"  .
    4. Select "WCM Flash"  .
    5. Verify the "Part Number"  (displayed at the end of the "Resident flash file for" statement) has been updated to the new part number. If it has updated, then the flash has been completed successfully. 
      NOTE: Due to the WCM module programming procedure, a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) may be set in other modules (PCM, TCM, BCM, MIC, ABS, etc.) within the vehicle, if so equipped. Some DTC's may cause the MIL to illuminate. From the "Home" screen select "System View". Then select "All DTCs". Press "Clear All Stored DTCs" if there are any DTCs shown on the list.

COMPLETION REPORTING AND REIMBURSEMENT

Claims for vehicles that have been serviced must be submitted on the DealerCONNECT Claim Entry Screen located on the Service tab. Claims submitted will be used by DaimlerChrysler to record Customer Satisfaction Notification service completions and provide dealer payments.

Use one of the following labor operation numbers and time allowances:

DEALER NOTIFICATION

All dealers will receive a copy of this dealer notification letter by mail. Two additional copies will be sent through the DCMMS. To view this notification on DealerCONNECT, select "Global Recall System" on the Service tab, then click on the description of this notification.

OWNER NOTIFICATION AND SERVICE SCHEDULING

All involved vehicle owners known to DaimlerChrysler are being notified of the service requirement by mail. They are requested to schedule appointments for this service with their dealers. A generic copy of the owner letter is attached.

Enclosed with each owner letter is an Owner Notification postcard to allow owners to update our records if applicable.

VEHICLE LISTS, GLOBAL RECALL SYSTEM, VIP AND DEALER FOLLOW UP

All involved vehicles have been entered into the DealerCONNECT Global Recall System (GRS) and Vehicle Information Plus (VIP) for dealer inquiry as needed.

GRS provides involved dealers with an updated  VIN list of their incomplete  vehicles. The owner's name, address and phone number are listed if known. Completed vehicles are removed from GRS within several days of repair claim submission.

To use this system, click on the "Service"  tab and then click on "Global Recall System."  Your dealer's VIN list for each recall displayed can be sorted by: those vehicles that were unsold at recall launch, those with a phone number, city, zip code, or VIN sequence.

Dealers should perform this repair on all unsold vehicles before retail delivery  . Dealers should also use the VIN list to follow up with all owners to schedule appointments for this repair.

VIN lists may contain confidential, restricted owner name and address information that was obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicles of various states. Use of this information is permitted for this notification only and is strictly prohibited from all other use.

OWNER NOTIFICATION LETTER

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION NOTIFICATION F15 REPROGRAM WIRELESS CONTROL MODULE 

Dear: (Name)

Customer satisfaction is very important to DaimlerChrysler. Accordingly, we are recommending the following service on some 2006 model year Chrysler PT Cruiser vehicles and Dodge Ram Pick Up trucks  .

The problem is... The software programmed into the Wireless Control Module (WCM) on your vehicle  (VIN: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) may prevent your vehicle from starting under certain conditions. 

What your dealer will do... DaimlerChrysler will repair your vehicle free of charge  . To do this, your dealer will reprogram the WCM module. The work will take about 1/2 hour to complete. However, additional time may be necessary depending on how dealer appointments are scheduled and processed.

What you must do...  Simply contact your dealer  right away to schedule a service appointment. No parts are required to complete this repair. Remember to bring this letter with you to your dealer  .

Please help us update our records, by filling out the enclosed prepaid postcard, if any of the conditions listed on the card apply to you or your vehicle. Be sure to print the last eight (8) characters of the VIN (VVVVVVVV) and notification code F15 on the postcard.
