Improper Idle Speed When A/C Is Operating

NOTE: For additional wiring diagrams, see WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  1. Ensure ignition is off. Check for poor connections or faulty terminals at Engine Control Module (ECM) connector C-118 (M/T) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector C-115 (A/T). ECM/PCM is located on passenger's side of vehicle. See Figure . Repair faulty connections as necessary. Recheck for improper idle speed condition. If connections are okay, go to next step.
  2. Start engine and allow to idle. Turn A/C switch on. Using DVOM, measure voltage between ground, and ECM connector C-118 terminal No. 65 or PCM connector C-115 terminal No. 61. See Fig 1 . If ambient (outside) temperature is less than 59°F (15°C), voltage should be one volt or less. If ambient temperature is greater than 65.4°F (18°C), battery voltage should be indicated. If voltage is as specified for current ambient temperature, replace ECM/PCM. If voltage is not as specified for current ambient temperature, diagnose A/C system. See appropriate article in AIR CONDITIONING & HEATING.
