Deceleration Shock

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Dodge Stratus and 2002 Chrysler Sebring. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Most likely cause is sudden change in air flow through idle air control.

  1. Connect scan tool to data link connector, located under instrument panel. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). Turn ignition off. If no DTCs exist, go to next step. If DTCs exist, go to appropriate test in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - SEBRING COUPE & STRATUS COUPE - 2.4L article.
  2. Check Idle Air Control (IAC) motor operation. See IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR  under MOTORS, RELAYS & SOLENOIDS. If IAC motor works, go to next step. If IAC motor does not work, see DTC P0506: IDLE CONTROL SYSTEM RPM LESS THAN EXPECTED IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR CIRCUIT or DTC P0507: IDLE CONTROL SYSTEM RPM MORE THAN EXPECTED IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR CIRCUIT under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - SEBRING COUPE & STRATUS COUPE - 2.4L article.
  3. Using scan tool, check data list item 14: THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR. See DATA LIST REFERENCE  . If data list item is okay, clean throttle body. Recheck operation. If data list item is not okay, repair or replace as necessary. Recheck operation.
