Stalls When Decelerating

Most likely cause is insufficient air flow due to defective idle air control motor system.

  1. If battery terminals have not been disconnected recently, go to next step. If battery terminals have been disconnected recently, start engine and allow to idle for 10 minutes. If problem still exists, go to next step.
  2. Connect scan tool to data link connector, located under instrument panel. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC). Turn ignition off. If no DTCs exist, go to next step. If any DTCs exist, go to appropriate test under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - SEBRING COUPE & STRATUS COUPE - 3.0L article.
  3. Using scan tool, check data list item No. 14: THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR. See DATA LIST REFERENCE  . If data list item is okay, go to next step. If data list item is not okay, repair or replace as necessary. Recheck operation.
  4. Using scan tool, perform actuator test No. 10: EGR SOLENOID. See ACTUATOR TESTS  . If EGR solenoid is okay, go to next step. If EGR solenoid is not okay, repair or replace as necessary. Recheck idle.
  5. Start engine. Using scan tool, check data list item No. 45: IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR POSITION. See DATA LIST REFERENCE  . Accelerate engine and allow to return to idle. Idle air control motor data should drop to 0-2 position during deceleration. If data list item is okay, check ignition coil, cap, rotor, spark plugs and spark plug cables. Check throttle body for contamination. Repair and/or clean as necessary. Recheck idle. If data list item is not okay, see DTC P0500: VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR CIRCUIT (M/T) under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - SEBRING COUPE & STRATUS COUPE - 3.0L article (M/T), or appropriate DIAGNOSIS article in TRANSMISSIONS (A/T).
