Chime Sounds With Driver's Side Door Open & Key Removed

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Dodge Ram Wagon, 2002 Dodge Ram Van, 2001 Dodge Ram Wagon, and 2001 Dodge Ram Van. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Possible Causes:

  1. Instrument Cluster Chime Stays On
  2. Tone Request Circuit Shorted To Ground
  3. Key-In Ignition Switch Sense Circuit Short To Ground
  4. Key-In Ignition Switch Shorted
  5. Headlamp Switch Shorted Test, For Chime System
  6. CTM - Chime Stays On

Testing

  1. Ensure headlight switch is turned to OFF position. Ensure ignition key is removed from ignition lock cylinder. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Using scan tool, read KEY IN IGN CHIME STATE status. If scan tool displays KEY IN IGN CHIME STATE: ON, go to next step. If scan tool does not display KEY IN IGN CHIME STATE: ON, test is complete.
  2. Ensure all doors are closed. Ensure all interior lights, including glove box light, are turned off. Remove light bulbs or disconnect door ajar switches as necessary. Ensure ignition is off and go to next step.
  3. Disconnect ignition switch connectors. Remove and disconnect headlight switch connectors. See HEADLIGHT SWITCH  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect Green 14-pin Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C1 and go to next step.
  4. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between ground and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 9 (Light/Blue wire). See Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Light/Blue wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  5. Ensure ignition key is removed. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between terminals No. 5 and 6 of ignition switch (component side). See Figure . If resistance is 10 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, replace ignition switch. See appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article.
  6. Reconnect all connectors. Open driver's side door. Turn headlight switch on. Using scan tool, monitor KEY IN IGN CHIME STATE status. While observing scan tool display, disconnect headlight switch connectors. If KEY IN IGN CHIME STATE status does not change when disconnecting headlight switch connectors, go to next step. If KEY IN IGN CHIME STATE status changes from ON to OFF, replace headlight switch.
  7. Ensure headlight switch is not turned completely counterclockwise. Ensure all doors are closed and courtesy/dome lights are off. Ensure no gauge HI/LO warnings or warning light conditions exist. Turn ignition on, wait 10 seconds and go to next step.
  8. Remove Electro-Mechanical Instrument Cluster (EMIC). See ELECTRO-MECHANICAL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect EMIC connectors. If chime does not stop, go to next step. If chime stops, replace EMIC.
  9. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Green 14-pin Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C1. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between ground and Black 10-pin EMIC connector C1 terminal No. 1 (Light Blue wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace CTM. See CENTRAL TIMER MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Light Blue wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
