Chime Inoperative With Key In Ignition & Driver's Side Door Open

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Dodge Ram Wagon, 2002 Dodge Ram Van, 2001 Dodge Ram Wagon, and 2001 Dodge Ram Van. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Possible Causes:

  1. Key-In Ignition Switch Open
  2. Key-In Ignition Switch Sense Circuit Open
  3. Key-In Ignition Switch Sense Open
  4. Driver Door Ajar Switch Ground Circuit Open
  5. Driver Door Ajar Switch Sense Circuit Open
  6. Driver Door Ajar Switch Open
  7. Central Timer Module

Testing

  1. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition on. Open driver's side door. Using scan tool, read DR DOOR AJAR SW status. If scan tool does not display DR DOOR AJAR SW: CLOSED, go to step  4 . If scan tool displays DR DOOR AJAR SW: CLOSED, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Remove steering column covers. Disconnect ignition switch harness connector. Insert key into ignition switch. Using a DVOM, check continuity between terminals No. 5 and 6 at ignition switch (component side). See Fig 1 . If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, replace ignition switch. See appropriate STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article.
  3. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect Green 14-pin Central Timer Module (CTM) connector C1. Using a DVOM, measure resistance of Light Blue wire between CTM connector C1 terminal No. 9 and ignition switch harness connector terminal No. 5. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace CTM. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open or high resistance in Light Blue wire.
  4. Remove driver's side door trim panel. See DOOR TRIM PANEL  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Disconnect Black 2-pin driver's side door ajar switch harness connector at driver's side door latch assembly. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between ground and driver's side door ajar switch harness connector terminal No. 2 (Black wire). If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open or high resistance in Black wire. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  5. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect Green 14-pin CTM connector C1. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between driver's side door ajar switch connector terminal No. 1 (Black/Light Blue wire) and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 1 (Black/White wire). See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open or high resistance in wire between driver's side door ajar switch connector terminal No. 1 and CTM connector C1 terminal No. 1. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  6. Connect CTM connector C1. Connect fused jumper wire between ground and driver's side door ajar switch connector terminal No. 1 (Black/Light Blue wire). Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read DR DOOR AJAR SW status. If scan tool displays DR DOOR AJAR SW: CLOSED, replace driver's side door latch assembly. If scan tool does not display DR DOOR AJAR SW: CLOSED, replace CTM. See CENTRAL TIMER MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
