Cylinder Head: Removal
- Perform fuel pressure release procedure before attempting any repairs. (Refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE )
- Disconnect negative cable from remote jumper terminal.
- Drain cooling system (Refer to STANDARD PROCEDURE - COOLING SYSTEM DRAINING ) and remove accessory drive belts (Refer to DRIVE BELTS - 2.7L ).
- Remove the vibration damper (Refer to VIBRATION DAMPER ).
- Remove upper and lower intake manifolds (Refer to INTAKE MANIFOLD - UPPER and INTAKE MANIFOLD - LOWER ).
- Remove cylinder head cover and timing chain cover. (Refer to CYLINDER HEAD COVER(S) ) (Refer to TIMING CHAIN COVER )
- Remove water outlet connector (Fig 1). (Refer to COOLANT OUTLET CONNECTOR - 2.7L )
- Rotate crankshaft until crankshaft sprocket timing mark aligns with timing mark on oil pump housing.
- Remove primary timing chain. (Refer to TIMING BELT/CHAIN AND SPROCKETS )
- Remove camshaft bearing caps gradually in REVERSE sequence of installation (10-1) (Fig 2).
- Remove camshafts and valvetrain components from cylinder head (Fig 3). Note component locations for re-installation in original locations.
- Remove V-Band clamp(s) at exhaust manifold to catalytic converter pipe.NOTE: Do not reuse V-Band clamp.CAUTION: Ensure cylinder head bolts 11-9 (Fig 4) are removed before attempting the removal of cylinder head, as damage to cylinder head and/or block may occur.
- Remove cylinder head bolts in reverse sequence of installation (Fig 4) starting with bolts 11-9, then bolts 8-1.
- Remove cylinder head(s).
- Remove and discard cylinder head gasket.
- Clean cylinder head and block sealing surfaces. (Refer to CLEANING )
