Mechanical Instrument Cluster

Instrument cluster with a tachometer is equipped with a Vacuum Fluorescent (VF) transmission range indicator, odometer and trip odometer display. Instrument cluster without a tachometer is equipped with a cable operated transmission range indicator. All instrument clusters include a speedometer, fuel gauge, water temperature gauge and a series of warning/indicator lights.

The Body Control Module (BCM) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) send the position of all gauges, status of all indicator lights and dimming level to instrument cluster on the Programmable Communication Interface (PCI) bus when ignition switch is in OFF (unlock), RUN or START positions. Vacuum fluorescent odometer/trip display works when ignition switch is in OFF (unlock), RUN or START positions. All other instrument cluster features only work when the ignition switch is in the RUN position. When ignition is switched from OFF to RUN position, a bulb check is performed. Bulb check consists of activating all PCI bus controlled indicator lights and all VF display segments (if equipped) for about 2-4 seconds. If communication between instrument cluster and other modules fail, NO BUS will be displayed on VF display.
