Retrieving Diagnostic Trouble Codes

NOTE: If Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) is illuminated and NO BUS is displayed in odometer display on instrument cluster, repair communication problem between instrument cluster and powertrain control module. See BODY CONTROL MODULES - SEBRING CONVERTIBLE, SEBRING SEDAN & STRATUS SEDAN article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
NOTE: Ensure battery is fully charged before retrieving diagnostic trouble codes.
  1. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below driver's side of instrument panel. See Fig 1. Turn ignition on. If scan tool will not power up, go to next step. If scan tool powers up, go to step  5.
  2. Check for loose cable connections or bad cable. If cable connections or cable are defective, repair or replace components as necessary, and recheck for DTCs, then go to step  5. If cable connections and cable are okay, go to next step.
  3. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 16 (Pink wire) at DLC. See Fig 2. If voltage is 11 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage if less than 11 volts, repair open or short in power circuit to DLC as necessary. See POWER DISTRIBUTION article in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  4. Measure resistance between ground and terminals No. 4 (Black/Yellow wire) and No. 5 (Black/Violet wire) at DLC. If both resistances are less than 5 ohms, repair scan tool as necessary, then go to next step. If either resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in appropriate wire. Black/Yellow wire runs from DLC to terminal No. 7 at junction box connector C4, then from terminal No. 3 at junction block connector C9 to ground. Ground point is located at behind driver's side kick panel, next to door jam. Black/Violet wire runs between DLC and ground. Ground point is located on lower left side of instrument panel.
  5. If scan tool displays an error message, (i.e., USER-REQUESTED COLD BOOT or USER-REQUESTED WARM BOOT), follow scan tool manufacturer's instructions. If scan tool does not display an error message, go to next step.
  6. If scan tool does not display a bus failure, go to next step. If scan tool displays a bus failure, repair bus circuit as necessary. See BODY CONTROL MODULES - SEBRING CONVERTIBLE, SEBRING SEDAN & STRATUS SEDAN article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  7. If any DTCs are displayed, perform appropriate diagnostic test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . After repair is complete, clear DTCs from PCM memory and perform appropriate verification test. Verification tests are located at the end of the diagnostic tests. If no DTCs are displayed, go to one of the following:
    • For starting or driveability problems, go to appropriate TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article for diagnosis by symptom.
    • For speed control problems and servicing information, refer to appropriate CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
    • For charging system problems, refer to appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS.
    • For transmission electronic controls system problems, refer to appropriate ELECTRONIC CONTROLS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
