Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge Not Operating Properly

NOTE: After making any repairs, perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  1. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) located under left side of instrument panel. See Figure . Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, check for Body Control Module (BCM), Electro Mechanical Instrument Cluster (EMIC) and Powertrain Control Module (PCM) DTCs. If any DTCs are present, diagnose by DTC. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If no DTCs are present, go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool, observe engine coolant temperature in BCM, EMIC and PCM. If scan tool reading of engine coolant temperature in BCM or EMIC is different from reading in PCM, diagnose communication circuit or EMIC. See BUS +/- SIGNALS OPEN OR NO RESPONSE FROM INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under COMMUNICATIONS.
  3. Perform self-test on instrument cluster. Press and hold TRIP/RESET button and turn ignition on. All gauges should move through entire range. If engine coolant temperature gauge does not perform as specified, replace EMIC. If engine coolant temperature gauge performs as specified, diagnose instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - SEBRING CONVERTIBLE, SEBRING SEDAN & STRATUS SEDAN article.
