Push Rod: Installation

CAUTION: The push rod to rocker arm mounting bolt must be installed so head of bolt is located on forward facing side of rocker arm when rocker arm is installed in vehicle for correct bolt orientation. If bolt is installed in wrong direction there will not be adequate clearance to upper control arm mounting bolt.
  1. Install push rod on rocker arm. Install push rod to rocker arm mounting bolt and nut. Tighten push rod to rocker arm mounting bolt to 163 N.m (120 ft. lbs.).
  2. Install rocker arm and push rod in vehicle using reverse order of its removal. Position rocker arm in frame bracket. Install rocker arm and push rod in vehicle using reverse order of its removal. Position rocker arm in frame bracket. With aid of a second technician move radiator as far rearward while lifting it up as high as possible. This is required to gain enough room to install rocker arm mounting bolt.
  3. From radiator side of frame bracket, install rocker arm mounting bolt and loosely install flag nut. Tighten rocker arm to frame bracket pivot bolt to 163 N.m (120 ft. lbs.). See Fig 3 .
NOTE: When installing push rod to lower control arm attaching bolt, bolt must be installed so nut is toward front of vehicle. See Figure . This is required to provide proper clearance to steering knuckle when vehicle is turned to full lock position.
  4. Install bolt and nut, mounting push rod to lower control arm. DO NOT tighten at this time, weight of vehicle must be supported by suspension when tightening this bolt. Install shock absorber.
CAUTION: When installing shock absorber into rocker arm, care must be used so upper bushing on shock absorber and rocker arm is not damaged.
  5. Install shock absorber in rocker arm. Bushing can be installed easiest by first carefully starting front and back edge of bushing into rocker using soft faced hammer. Install shock absorber to rocker arm mounting bolt. See Figure . Tighten bolt to 163 N.m (120 ft. lbs.). Install mounting bolt for stabilizer bar attaching link into rocker arm. See Figure . Use reverse sequence of bolt removal to install it in rocker arm.
CAUTION: Access to stabilizer bar attaching link bolt and rocker arm mounting bolt for torquing, is from back side of rocker arm. Between rocker arm and A/C condenser. Extreme car must be used so condenser is not damaged when torquing bolts.
  6. Tighten stabilizer bar attaching link to rocker arm mounting bolt to 61 N.m (45 ft. lbs.). Raise vehicle on jack stands or on a frame contact type hoist. Install bolt and flag nut, mounting removed shock absorber to frame crossmember. See Figure . Install wiring harness routing clip on frame crossmember. See Figure . Lower vehicle. Check to ensure that both rubber isolators are on mounting pins on bottom of radiator. Install bottom of radiator support bar on front structure. See Fig 2 .
  7. Install 2 mounting plates on radiator upper mounting brackets. See Fig 1 . The mounting plates are to be installed with weld nuts facing inward. The weld nuts must line up with support strut mounting holes in radiator upper support. Install radiator upper support on front structure. Loosely install 4 bolts mounting radiator upper support to front structure. Loosely install bolts mounting support struts to radiator upper support.
  8. Tighten 4 radiator upper support mounting bolts. Tighten 2 bolts mounting support struts to radiator upper support. Install grill. Install and securely tighten 4 screws mounting grill to front structure. See Figure . Position vehicle on a drive on hoist or an alignment rack so full weight of vehicle is supported by suspension. Correctly jounce vehicle to obtain correct curb height.
NOTE: The following two steps must be done last to ensure vehicle will be at correct curb height replacing push rod.
  9. Tighten mounting nut and bolt for push rod to lower control arm bushing attachment to 163 N.m (120 ft. lbs.). Tighten both shock absorber lower mounting bolts to 163 N.m (120 ft. lbs.).
