Master Cylinder

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Dodge Intrepid, 2002 Chrysler Intrepid, 2002 Chrysler Concorde, and 2002 Chrysler 300M. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: When clamping the master cylinder in a vise for bleeding, carefully tighten the vise just enough to hold the master cylinder from moving. Excessive pressure can damage the master cylinder.
NOTE: The master cylinder outlet ports use ISO style flares and metric threads. Special Tool Package (8822) includes ISO style flare adapters with metric threads to be used in conjunction with Bleeder Tubes Package (8358).
  1. Clamp master cylinder in a vise.
  2. Attach special tools for bleeding master cylinder according to the following procedures.
    • For non-ABS master cylinders, thread one Adapter (8822-2) into each outlet port. Tighten Adapters. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
    • For ABS master cylinders, thread one Adapter (8822-2) into the primary outlet port and one Adapter (8822-1) into the secondary outlet port. Tighten Adapters. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
    • On all vehicles, thread one Bleeder Tube (8358-1) into each Adapter. Tighten bleeder tubes. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Flex bleeder tubes and place ends into mouth of fluid reservoir as far down as possible. See Fig 1 .
  3. NOTE: Make sure open ends of bleeder tubes stay below surface of brake fluid once reservoir is filled to proper level to avoid ingesting air while bleeding.
  4. Fill reservoir with Mopar(R) Brake Fluid or equivalent conforming to DOT 3 specifications, Make sure fluid level stays above tips of bleeder tubes in reservoir.
  5. Using a wooden dowel as a pushrod, slowly depress master cylinder pistons then release pressure, allowing pistons to return to released position. Repeat several times until all air bubbles are expelled. Make sure fluid level stays above tips of bleeder tubes in reservoir while bleeding.
  6. Remove bleeder tubes. Plug outlets and install filler cap.
  7. Remove master cylinder from vise and install on power brake booster. See MASTER CYLINDER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
