Test NS-3: Checking Engine Mechanical Systems

NOTE: If Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is replaced, PCM must be properly programmed. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE PROGRAMMING  under PROGRAMMING.
  1. Check for proper spark plug wire routing and firing order. On 2.4L, firing order is 1-3-4-2 with cylinder No. 1 at timing belt end of engine and cylinder No. 4 at flywheel end of engine. On 3.0L, 3.3L and 3.8L, firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6. Cylinder No. 2 is front cylinder on left side when viewed from flywheel end of engine. Cylinder No. 1 is front cylinder on right side when viewed from flywheel end of engine. On all models, if spark plug wires are correct, go to next step. If spark plug wires are incorrect, repair as necessary.
  2. Remove all spark plugs. Inspect sparks plugs for wetness caused by fuel. If spark plugs are not wet, go to next step. If spark plugs are wet, clean spark plugs.
  3. Check compression on all cylinders. If compression on all cylinders is at least 100 psi (7 kg/cm2 ) and compression between all cylinders is within 25 percent of each other, go to next step. If compression on all cylinders is not at least 100 psi (7 kg/cm2 ) and compression between all cylinders is not within 25 percent of each other, repair engine mechanical problem as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1A  .
  4. Check engine valve timing. See appropriate article in ENGINES. If engine valve timing is correct, go to next step. If engine valve timing is not correct, repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1A  .
  5. If no other potential causes exist and no DTCs exist, it is assumed that Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is defective. Replace PCM. PCM is located between driver's side front fender and power distribution center, near battery. Perform TEST VER-1A  .
