DTC P0703: Brake Switch Stuck Pressed Or Released

NOTE: For connector terminal ID, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
NOTE: Brake switch may also be referred to as stoplight switch. Brake switch operation is monitored when engine is running. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) expects the signal to be high for 16 cycles while it monitors brake switch signal during acceleration and deceleration modes. DTC may be stored in PCM if improper brake switch signal is received. Possible causes are: defective or improperly adjusted brake switch, defective PCM, or defective connectors or wiring.
  1. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect brake switch connector. Brake switch is located near top of brake pedal.
  2. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using voltmeter, check voltage at terminal No. 1 (White/Pink wire) on brake switch connector. If voltage is more than 9 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 9 volts or less, go to step  5 .
  3. Turn ignition off. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 2 (Black wire) on brake switch connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on Black wire between brake switch and ground connection. Ground connection is located behind driver's side of instrument panel, just above kick panel. Perform TEST VER-2A  .
  4. Turn ignition on with engine off. Connect jumper wire between terminals No. 1 (White/Pink wire) and No. 2 (Black wire) on brake switch connector while using scan tool to monitor brake switch status. If brake switch status changes from PRESSED to RELEASED, replace or adjust brake switch as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2A  . If brake switch status does not change from PRESSED to RELEASED, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2A  . PCM is located between driver's side front fender and power distribution center, near battery.
  5. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located between driver's side front fender and power distribution center, near battery.
  6. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between terminal No. 1 (White/Pink wire) on brake switch connector and terminal No. 62 (White/Pink wire) on Gray PCM connector C2. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open on White/Pink wire between PCM and brake switch. Perform TEST VER-2A  .
  7. Inspect brake switch connector and PCM connectors for corroded, pushed out, miswired or damaged terminals. If terminals are not corroded, pushed out, miswired or damaged, go to next step. If terminals are corroded, pushed out, miswired or damaged, repair connectors as necessary. Perform TEST VER-2A  .
  8. Ensure brake switch connector and PCM connectors are still disconnected. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and terminal No. 1 (White/Pink wire) on brake switch connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2A  . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on White/Pink wire between PCM and brake switch. Perform TEST VER-2A  .
