Test NTC-39: Fuel Pump Drive Control Circuit
- Ensure ignition is off. Remove fuel pump relay. Fuel pump relay is located on firewall at left rear corner of engine compartment. See Figure. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and Black/White wire at fuel pump relay harness connector. If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, go to step 4.
- Check Black/White wire and connectors between ignition switch and fuel pump relay. Repair wiring and connectors as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. If wiring and connectors are okay, go to next step.
- Remove instrument panel lower cover. Remove steering column shrouds. Disconnect ignition switch connector. Check ignition switch continuity. See IGNITION SWITCH CONTINUITY table. See Figure. If continuity is not as specified, replace ignition switch. Recheck system operation.IGNITION SWITCH CONTINUITY
Switch Position Continuity Between Terminals No. LOCK No Continuity ACC 1 & 6 ON 1, 2, 4 & 6 START 1, 2, 3 & 5 - Measure voltage between ground and Red/Black wire at fuel pump relay harness connector. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check wiring and 33-pin junction connector No. 4 and Black 12-pin connector A-37 between battery and fuel pump relay. See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair wiring and connectors as necessary.
- Turn ignition off. Install fuel pump relay. Disconnect PCM connectors. PCM is located at left front corner of engine compartment, in front of Electronic Automatic Transmission Electronic Control Module (EATX-ECM), near relay box. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 74 (White/Red wire) at PCM harness connector A-78. See Figure. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check White/Red wire between fuel pump relay and terminal No. 74 at PCM harness connector A-78. Repair wiring as necessary. If wiring is okay, check fuel pump relay connector for damaged pins, corrosion or loose terminals. Repair connector as necessary and recheck system operation.
- Check PCM connector A-78 for damaged pins, corrosion or loose terminals. Repair connector as necessary and recheck system operation. If connector is okay, replace PCM.
