Spindle Assembly: Removal
- Raise vehicle. Remove wheel and brake drum. If vehicle is equipped with disc brakes, remove brake caliper and rotor. If vehicle is equipped with drum brakes, remove brake hose bracket and wheel cylinder from backing plate.
- On all models, remove rear hub and bearing assembly cotter pin and nut retainer. Remove hub and bearing retaining nut and washer from spindle. Remove hub and bearing assembly. Unbolt and remove disc or drum backing plate from spindle. See Figure . Detaching brake cable is not necessary.
- On models equipped with anti-lock brakes, remove speed sensor and cable routing tube. See Figure
- Remove 4 bolts attaching disc brake adaptor to spindle. Remove adapter, disc shield, parking brake shoes and cable as an assembly from spindle.
- On all models, disconnect trailing arm and lower control arms from spindle assembly. Fully remove spindle-to-strut assembly pinch bolt. Insert center punch into spindle hole and tap until jammed into place. Using a hammer and brass drift punch, tap top surface of spindle, until it is driven off of strut assembly.
CAUTION:
If speed sensor is left attached, damage may occur to speed sensor cable when trailing arm is lowered.
