Fuse & Electrical Short Test

  1. Turn engine off. Remove and inspect EBL (rear window defogger) fuse from Power Distribution Center (PDC). PDC is located in engine compartment. See PDC cover label for fuse location. If fuse is open, go to next step. If fuse is not open, on vehicles with Automatic Temperature Control (ATC), see ATC TEST 1A: REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER MALFUNCTION  under SCAN TOOL TESTING under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS. If fuse is not open on vehicles with Manual Temperature Control (MTC), see MTC TEST 1A: REAR WINDOW DEFOGGER MALFUNCTION  under SCAN TOOL TESTING under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
  2. Locate rear window grid negative lead-to-ground lug. Remove ground lug screw. Isolate ground lug. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance between ground and ground lug. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, rear window defogger grid is shorting to ground. Replace rear window defogger grid. If resistance is more than 100 ohms, go to step  4 . If resistance is not as specified, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect rear window defogger grid voltage feed wire from wiring harness. If resistance is still less than 10 ohms, rear window defogger grid is shorting to ground. Replace rear window defogger grid. If resistance is more than 100 ohms, go to next step.
  4. At this time, a problem exists in circuits to rear window defogger relay. Using an ohmmeter, check circuits to rear window defogger relay. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair circuits as necessary. If circuits are okay, replace EBL fuse.
