Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Control System

  1. Ensure coolant temperature is more than 170°F (76°C). With transmission in Neutral, allow engine to idle for 70 seconds. Quickly rev engine to 2000-3000 RPM. If EGR valve stem moves when revving engine, EGR control system is operating normally.
  2. Disconnect and plug vacuum hose from EGR valve. Connect a hand vacuum pump to EGR valve. Apply at least 2.3 in. Hg of vacuum to EGR valve. Engine idle speed should become unstable or stall. If engine speed does not drop, check for plugged EGR passage.
