Test NS-3: Checking Fuel System

  1. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, read throttle position sensor voltage. If throttle position sensor voltage is 1.5 volts or less, go to next step. If throttle position sensor voltage is more than 1.5 volts, ensure connector on throttle position sensor is clean and properly connected. If connector is okay, replace throttle position sensor. Perform TEST VER-1A . If connector is not clean or properly connected, repair as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1A .
  2. Turn ignition off. Ensure throttle cables at throttle body are not holding the throttle open. If throttle cables are not holding throttle open, go to next step. If throttle cables are holding throttle open, repair components as necessary. Perform TEST VER-1A .
  3. If vehicle is equipped with vehicle theft security system, go to next step. If vehicle is not equipped with vehicle theft security system, go to step  6.
  4. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, read vehicle theft security system status. If scan tool does not indicate FUEL IS ON, go to next step. If scan tool indicates FUEL IS ON, go to step  6.
  5. Go to VEHICLE THEFT SECURITY SYSTEM (VTSS) TEST 1 in appropriate BODY CONTROL COMPUTER TESTS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. If vehicle theft system does not operate properly, repair vehicle theft system. Test is complete. If vehicle theft system operates properly, replace PCM. PCM is located at driver's side front corner of engine compartment, just below air cleaner assembly. Perform TEST VER-1A .
  6. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, actuate ASD fuel system test. Check for fuel pump operating sound at fuel pump. Fuel pump is located in the fuel tank. If fuel pump operates, go to next step. If fuel pump does not operate, perform TEST NS-5: FUEL PUMP INOPERATIVE .
  7. Ensure ignition is off. Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE  procedure. On 2.4L, connect fuel pressure gauge to fuel pressure test port located at center of fuel rail. On 2.5L, disconnect fuel supply line quick disconnect fitting at chassis fuel supply line located near front (timing belt end) of engine. Connect Fuel Pressure Adapter (6539) and fuel pressure gauge between fuel supply line to fuel rail and chassis fuel supply line.
  8. On all models, ensure fuel tank is at least 1/4 full. Turn ignition on with engine off. Using scan tool, actuate ASD fuel system test and note fuel pressure. Fuel pressure should be 43-53 psi (3.0-3.7 kg/cm2 ). If fuel pressure is within specification, go to next step. If fuel pressure is more than 53 psi (3.7 kg/cm2 ), perform NS-6: HIGH FUEL PRESSURE . If fuel pressure is less than 43 psi (3.0 kg/cm2 ), perform NS-7: LOW FUEL PRESSURE .
  9. Using scan tool, stop actuation of ASD fuel system test. Turn ignition off. Release fuel pressure. Remove test equipment. On 2.5L, reinstall fuel supply. On all models, attempt to start engine. If engine starts and stalls repeatedly, perform NS-4: CHECKING IDLE AIR CONTROL MOTOR . If engine does not start and stop repeatedly, perform NS-2: CHECKING ENGINE MECHANICAL SYSTEMS .
