Overhaul - 42LE Automatic Transmission: Lubrication

NOTE: Mopar ATF+4, Type 9602 fluid should be used in reassembly and operation of this transaxle. Use of any other fluid type may cause harsh shifts and/or driveability concerns. All references to ATF in this article indicate Mopar ATF+4, Type 9602 fluid. For additional information, see appropriate AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICING article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.

Transaxle contains separate oil sumps for transaxle ATF and differential gear oil. Ensure both fluid levels are filled to proper level when servicing or repairing transaxle. See appropriate AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICING article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.

All models use Mopar ATF+4, Type 9602 fluid. Add appropriate amount of fluid. See TRANSAXLE FLUID CAPACITY  table. Start engine and allow it to idle for at least one minute. With brakes applied, shift transaxle through all gears, ending in Park. Add additional fluid to bring fluid level to 1/8" below ADD mark on dipstick. Recheck fluid level with transaxle at normal operating temperature. Adjust fluid level within HOT range on dipstick.

Differential unit fluid level should be at bottom of fill hole. All models use MOPAR 75W-90 petroleum based hypoid gear lubricant. See DIFFERENTIAL FLUID CAPACITY  table.
