System Self-Tests

  1. VTSS self-test mode is used to verify operation of all monitored switches or circuits and can only be activated with a scan tool. Connect scan tool to DLC, and using scan tool, select self-test mode. See BODY CONTROL COMPUTER TESTS in BODY CONTROL COMPUTER article.
NOTE: Vehicle Theft Security System (VTSS) or VTSS self-test mode will be inoperative if Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has been replaced within last 20 ignition switch cycles.
  2. Once in self-test mode, horn will sound twice, indicating trunk key cylinder is positioned correctly. Place key in ignition. Warning light, headlights and interior lights will flash indicating proper operation. If doors are not closed, interior lights will not flash. Remove key from ignition to check each door lock switch operation.
  3. In the following self-test mode steps there must be a one second delay between each action. While in self-test mode, horn should sound once at each of following steps indicating proper operation:
    • Activate power door locks in both LOCK and UNLOCK positions. Horn will sound after each activation.
    • Close all doors. Open, then close each door. Horn will sound when door lock switch closes, and then again when switch opens.
    • Rotate key in both door lock cylinders to lock and unlock positions. Horn will sound as switch closes, and again when it opens. Ensure there is a one second delay between changing switch positions or horn will not sound.
    • Press LOCK button. Horn will sound.
    • Press UNLOCK button. Horn will sound.
    • Cycle ignition switch to ON position. A single horn sound will indicate proper operation of ignition switch and take VTSS out of self-test mode. VTSS self-test mode can also be exited using scan tool.
    • For any of these tests, if switch does not remain open or closed for at least one second, the horn will only sound once.
    • If vehicle is equipped with Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) system, activating each RKE function will cause horn to sound.
  4. Lack of a horn sound during any operation indicates a switch failure. Check for continuity at switch. If switch continuity is okay, check for an open or shorted circuit between switch and BCM. If there are no open or shorted circuits, failure could be a faulty horn or internal fault in BCM. See BODY CONTROL COMPUTER TESTS in BODY CONTROL COMPUTER article.
