Shift Interlock Cable

  1. On column shift applications, go to next step. On floor shift applications, go to step 3).
  2. On column shift applications, if shift interlock does not operate properly, shift interlock cassette on steering column must be replaced. Shift interlock cable may only be adjusted once after installing NEW shift interlock cassette on steering column. For servicing procedures, see STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES article in ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT section.
  3. On floor shift applications, apply parking brake. Place gearshift lever in Neutral. Remove set screw for removal of gearshift lever knob. Remove gearshift lever knob. Remove ashtray, if necessary.
  4. Remove center console bezel-to-center console screw located just below ashtray area on center console bezel. Disengage clips holding each rear corner of center console bezel on center console. Remove center console bezel.
  5. Loosen shift interlock lever lock nut. See Fig 1. Turn ignition on. Remove shift interlock cable from retaining bracket on gearshift lever assembly. See Fig 1. Slide end of shift interlock cable from groove in interlock lever. See Fig 1.
  6. Operation of shift interlock cable should be checked. With ignition on, pull on end of shift interlock cable. Shift interlock cable should move freely and return to bottomed out position when released. If shift interlock cable operates correctly, go to next step. If shift interlock cable does not operate correctly, check for improperly installed or kinked shift interlock cable. Repair as necessary.
  7. Turn ignition off and remove ignition key. Pull on end of shift interlock cable. Shift interlock cable should not move when pulling on end of cable. If shift interlock cable will not move, go to next step. If shift interlock cable will move, check for improperly installed or kinked shift interlock cable. Repair as necessary.
  8. Place gearshift lever in Park. Slide end of shift interlock cable in groove on interlock lever. Ensure end of shift interlock cable is fully seated in groove.
  9. Slide shift interlock cable into retaining bracket on gearshift lever assembly until cable snaps into place. Ensure gearshift lever is still in Park. Turn ignition off and remove ignition key.
  10. Loosen shift interlock lever adjusting nut (if not previously loosened) and allow shift interlock cable to adjust to proper position. Shift interlock cable will automatically adjust when adjusting nut is loosened.
  11. Tighten shift interlock lever adjusting nut. To check for proper cable adjustment, ensure ignition is off. Ensure gearshift lever is locked in Park. If gearshift lever is locked in Park, go to next step. If gearshift lever is not locked in Park, readjust shift interlock cable.
  12. Turn ignition on. Place gearshift lever in Reverse and attempt to remove ignition key. If ignition key cannot be removed, go to next step. If ignition key can be removed, readjust shift interlock cable.
  13. Place gearshift lever in Park. Turn ignition off. Attempt to remove ignition key. If ignition key can be removed, shift interlock cable is properly adjusted. If ignition key cannot be removed, readjust shift interlock cable. Reinstall gearshift lever and center console bezel.
