Shift Cable

  1. On column shift applications, go to next step. On floor shift applications, go to step 6).
  2. On column shift applications, apply parking brake. Remove upper steering column cover. Note location of shift cable and shift cable adjuster lock on steering column. See Fig 1. Using screwdriver, rotate shift cable adjuster lock to unlock position. See Fig 1.
  3. Ensure manual control lever on transaxle is rotated fully rearward to Park position and parking sprag is fully engaged. Manual control lever is lever on transaxle that shift cable is connected to.
    CAUTION: Parking sprag must be fully engaged before adjusting shift cable.
  4. Verify transaxle is in Park and parking sprag is fully engaged by slightly moving vehicle back and forth. Tilt steering column to fully downward position. Place gearshift lever in Park. Ensure ignition key is removed from lock cylinder assembly.
  5. Adjust shift cable by rotating shift cable adjuster lock into locked position. Reinstall upper steering column cover. Ensure gearshift lever operates smoothly without binding and engine starts with gearshift lever in Park and Neutral positions only. If engine starts with gearshift lever in any other gears except Park and Neutral, or binding exists, readjust shift cable.

  6. On floor shift applications, apply parking brake. Place gearshift lever in Neutral. Loosen set screw and remove gearshift lever knob. Remove ashtray, If necessary. Center console bezel fits around gearshift lever and on top of center console.
  7. Remove center console bezel-to-center console screw located just below ashtray area on center console bezel. Disengage clips holding each rear corner of center console bezel on center console. Remove center console bezel.
  8. Loosen shifter cable adjuster nut at shift cable adjuster. See Fig 2. Ensure manual control lever on transaxle is rotated fully rearward to Park position and parking sprag is fully engaged. Manual control lever is lever on transaxle that shift cable is connected to.
    CAUTION: Parking sprag must be fully engaged before adjusting shift cable.
  9. Verify transaxle is in Park and parking sprag is fully engaged by slightly moving vehicle back and forth. Place gearshift lever in Park. Ensure ignition key is removed from lock cylinder assembly. Tighten shift cable adjuster nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  10. Reinstall center console bezel and gearshift lever knob. Ensure gearshift lever operates smoothly without binding and engine starts with gearshift lever in Park and Neutral positions only. If engine starts with gearshift lever in any other gears except Park and Neutral, or binding exists, readjust shift cable.
