SPD Prop Steer Test

  1. If Electronic Variable Power Steering (EVPS) system is operating incorrectly, problem may be caused by defective Vehicle Speed Signal (VSS) from Transmission Control Module (TCM). See Fig 1 . Steering operation can be checked using a scan tool and performing SPD PROP STEER test.
  2. Before performing SPD PROP STEER test, ensure gearshift is in Park, apply brakes. The SPD PROP STEER test will cause speedometer to display 60 MPH and required steering effort will increase.
  3. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC) located under instrument panel near steering column. Start engine. Using scan tool, select MISCELLANEOUS, then SPD PROP TEST.
  4. Note effort required to turn steering during test with brakes applied. Release brake and note that steering effort should decrease. Steering effort should be noticeably different.
  5. Repeat procedure to ensure correct steering effort. If steering operation is not correct, check for the following possible causes and repair as necessary:
    • Open or short in VSS circuit.
    • Open in ground circuit.
    • Open or short in ignition switch output circuit.
    • Open in circuit between Solenoid Control Module (SCM) and solenoid control valve.
    • Faulty SCM.
    • Faulty TCM.
  6. For help in diagnosing these possible causes, proceed to SYSTEM TEST  .
