Fixed Column With Column Shift Overhaul: Reassembly

  1. During reassembly, apply a thin coat of multi-purpose grease to all friction surfaces. Clamp column in a vise so both ends are accessible. Position spring and shift lever in shift housing and tap retaining roll pin into place. See Fig 1.

  2. Assemble lock cylinder plunger spring and install assembly onto lock housing. Install shift lever gate onto lock housing. See Fig 2. Place shift lever in mid-position and seat lock housing on top of jacket. Index key-way in housing with the slot in jacket. Insert mount screws and tighten to 90 INCH lbs. (10 N.m). See Figure.

  3. Grease and assemble 2 lock levers, lock lever spring and pin. See Fig 3. Install lock lever assembly into lock housing. Seat pin firmly in place in lock casting notch. See Figure. Install ignition switch actuator rod from bottom through oblong hole in lock housing and attach to bellcrank.

  4. Position bellcrank assembly into lock housing. While pulling ignition switch rod down column, install bellcrank onto its mounting surface. Gearshift lever should be in Park position. Place ignition switch on ignition switch actuator rod and rotate 90 degrees to lock rod into position.
  5. To install ignition lock, insert key, turn to Lock position and remove key. This will cause buzzer actuating lever to retract in cylinder. Now insert cylinder into housing far enough to contact switch actuator. Insert key, press inward and rotate cylinder.
  6. When parts align, cylinder will move inward and spring loaded lock retainers will snap into place. This will lock cylinder into housing. With lock cylinder and ignition switch in LOCK position (second detent from top), tighten ignition switch mounting screws.
  7. Feed buzzer/chime switch wires behind wiring post and down through space between housing and jacket. Remove ignition key and position switch in housing and tighten mounting screws. See Figure.
  8. To install steering shaft, lubricate and install a new steering shaft "O" ring on upper end of shaft. See Fig 4. Insert steering shaft completely into column jacket. Install lock plate and spring. Press bearing into bearing housing. Bearing must be fully seated in bearing cavity.

  9. Install bearing housing. Push up on steering shaft, compressing lock plate spring. Install steering shaft snap ring while pushing up on shaft. Install ignition key light assembly onto bearing housing. Install turn signal/flasher switch onto bearing housing.
  10. Feed wires from turn signal switch and key light through opening between bearing housing and lock housing, then along bottom of jacket. Assemble wiper/washer switch, control stalk and hider. Place wiper/washer switch assembly into lock housing.
  11. Feed switch wires through lock housing and shift housing and connect to turn signal switch. Install dimmer switch actuator rod through housing and into pocket in wiper/washer switch. Compress dimmer switch until two .093" drill bits can be inserted into alignment holes.
  12. With one end of rod in wiper/washer switch and other end in dimmer switch, apply slight upward pressure and fasten dimmer switch to its bracket. Remove the drill bits. Switch should click when lever is lifted and click again, as lever returns, just before it reaches its stop in down position.
CAUTION: On vehicles equipped with air bag restraint system, use extreme caution when servicing to avoid personal injury and vehicle damage. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article in the ACCESSORIES/SAFETY EQUIPMENT section before installing steering wheel.
