Column Reassembly

Install bolt spring and spring retainer screw. Tighten to specification. Install shift lever spring in bowl. Slide bowl into jacket. Install wave washer and jacket mounting plate. Work jacket mounting plate into notches in jacket.
Install shift tube in lower end of jacket. Install thrust washer and retaining ring. Slide dimmer switch actuator rod through hole in support. Feed rod between bowl and jacket. Install support. Connect support to lock plate. Tighten to specification.
Install lower bearing 3/16" into lower end of jacket. Install centering spheres and anti-lash spring in upper steering shaft. See Figure Install lower steering shaft from same side of spheres as spring end protrudes. Ensure master serrations align.
Position shift bowl in Park. Install ignition switch actuator rod from bottom, between bowl and jacket. Guide back of coupling into support slot. Assemble bearing housing over steering shaft. Engage rack over end of ignition switch actuator. Position access hole of bearing housing over end of dimmer switch actuator rod. Rotate housing counterclockwise to assemble.
Hold locking shoes in disengaged position. Install bearing housing over steering shaft until pivot holes align with holes in support. Install pivot pins. Replace washer/wiper pivot assembly and press pivot pin in cover. Install washer/wiper switch.
Install tilt lever opening shield in cover. Position cap over dimmer switch actuator rod. Guide actuator rod into pivot slot during cover assembly. Hold cap so cover will slide over it.
Place housing in full up position. Lubricate guide, peg on support, tilt spring and tilt retainer spring. Install guide and retainer. Install bearing inner race and seat. Install lock housing cover and tighten 3 screws to specifications.
Install buzzer/chime switch. Install key lamp. Install turn signal switch wires and connectors through cover, bearing housing and shift bowl. Install hazard warning knob. Install canceling cam assembly and lock plate. Install new retaining with Remover/Installer (C-4156).
Install tilt release lever and turn signal lever. Install ignition lock by turning key to "LOCK" position and removing key. Insert cylinder into housing far enough to contact drive shaft. Press inward and move ignition switch actuator rod to align parts. The cylinder will move inward and spring loaded retainer will snap into place.
Install ignition switch and dimmer switch. Ensure actuator rods are firmly seated. Install wire protector on column jacket. Remove column from vise and fixture. Install column in vehicle.
