Column Disassembly
- Remove 4 bracket assembly-to-column jacket bolts. Remove wiring protector from column jacket. Attach column to Holding Fixture (C-4132) and install in vise.
- Remove tilt lever. Remove hazard warning knob. Remove hider and sleeve from washer/wiper switch. Rotate wiper/washer switch shaft to full clockwise position and pull straight out to remove. Remove lock plate plastic cover. Remove lock plate retaining ring with Lock Plate Depressing Tool (C-4156) and small screwdriver. See Figure Remove lock plate, canceling cam and upper bearing spring.
- Remove switch actuator screw and arm. Remove 3 turn signal switch screws. Place gear shift in low position. Wrap tape around connector and wires. Remove turn signal switch and wiring. Remove key lamp. Put key in "LOCK" position. Insert a thin screwdriver into slot next to switch mounting screw and depress spring latch at bottom of slot. Remove lock cylinder. See Figure

- Remove buzzer/chime switch from housing. Remove 3 screws and housing cover. Remove washer/wiper switch. Place column in upright position. With a large Phillips head screwdriver, remove spring retainer, spring and guide. See Fig 1 Remove 2 dimmer switch screws. Remove dimmer switch from rod.
- Push in upper steering shaft enough to remove steering shaft inner race seat and inner race. Remove ignition switch. Place Pivot Pin Remover (C-4016) over pivot pin. See Fig 2 Thread small portion of screw firmly into pivot pin. Hold screw from turning with one wrench, turn nut clockwise with a second wrench to withdraw pivot pin from support. Remove opposite pivot pin in similar manner.
- Use tilt release lever to disengage lock shoes. Remove bearing housing assembly by pulling upward. Move housing assembly left to disengage rack from actuator. Rotate housing clockwise to free dimmer switch actuator rod. Remove actuator assembly.
- Remove steering shaft coupling. Double coupling is held to shaft by roll pin. Remove steering shaft assembly from upper end. Remove center spheres and anti-lash springs from steering shaft. Remove 4 bolts holding support to lock plate.
- Remove support from column jacket end. Remove shift gate from support. Remove shift tube retaining ring. Remove thrust washer. Use screwdriver to disengage plastic shift tube support from jacket lower end. Remove shift tube from bowl with Remover (C-4120). Remove wave washer. Remove bowl from jacket.
