Fixed Column: Reassembly
- Install shift tube into shift tube housing. Tighten shift tube set screw. Connect flexible coupling to 2 cross straps with 4 bolts. Align master splines and place coupling assembly on flanges. Tighten to specification.
- Coat all friction surfaces with multipurpose grease. Clamp column in vise so both ends are accessible. Check column tube-to-mandrel rivet tightness. Replace, if necessary, using 1/8" diameter by 1/4" long aluminum "blind" rivets. DO NOT use steel rivets. This joint must shear under impact.
- Install floor plate and grommet on column lower jacket end. Position gearshift housing on column jacket. Ensure support is pressed in place against jacket tabs. Install dust seal and shift tube support on shift tube. Slide shift tube assembly into jacket. Guide key on upper end of tube into slot on gearshift housing. Hold together and tighten shift housing set screw.
- Position crossover load spring and shift lever in gearshift housing. Tap pivot into place. Assemble key cylinder plunger spring. Install key cylinder on lock housing. Install shift lever gate on lock housing. Place ignition switch rod through shift housing.
- Place shift lever in middle position. Place ignition switch rod through the oval hole in lock housing. Seat lock housing on top of jacket, aligning keyway in housing with slot in jacket. Insert 4 holding lock housing-to-jacket screws. Tighten to specification.
- Lubricate and assemble 2 lock levers, lock lever spring and pin. Install lock lever assembly in lock housing. Seat pin firmly in bottom of slots. Ensure lock lever spring leg is firmly seated in lock casting notch. Install bellcrank assembly into lock housing.
- Install ignition switch actuator rod into bellcrank. While pulling ignition switch actuator rod down column, install bellcrank onto its mounting surface. Gearshift lever should be in "PARK." Connect ignition switch to actuator rod and rotate switch 1/4 turn to lock in position.
- Install ignition lock by turning key to "LOCK" position and remove key. Insert lock cylinder far enough into housing to contact switch actuator. Insert key and press inward. When parts align, cylinder will move inward and spring loaded retainers will snap into place, locking cylinder into housing. Put key cylinder and ignition switch in "LOCK" position, second detent from top. Tighten ignition switch mounting screws.
- Feed buzzer/chime switch wires behind wiring post, down through space between housing and jacket. Remove ignition key. Install buzzer/chime switch.
- Fill steering shaft coupling body 1/2 full of multipurpose grease. Install cover and seal on shaft. Press shoe pin equally into steering shaft. Place spring on shaft side, straddling shoe pin. Place shoes on pin ends with flat side toward spring, engaging tangs. Squeeze shoes together, compress spring and push assembly into coupling body. Align master splines on coupling body and upper shaft.
- Drive new dowel pin into outer surface of coupling body. Position seal and cover on coupling body. Crimp tangs over coupling body. Move shaft in and out of pot body to distribute multipurpose grease.
- Install bearing and spring on steering shaft. Insert steering shaft assembly completely into column assembly. Push up on steering shaft, compressing spring until snap ring can be installed. Grease inside lock plate. Install lock plate on steering shaft. Install upper bearing snap ring on steering shaft. Install 4 bearing housing-to-lock housing screws.
- Press upper bearing into bearing housing until fully seated. Position bearing housing into lock housing. Install upper snap ring. Install bearing housing to lock housing screws.
- Install ignition key lamp assembly on bearing housing. Install turn signal switch. Feed turn signal and key lamp wires between bearing housing and lock housing. Install bearing retaining plate. Tighten to specification. Ensure turn signal switch assembly ground wires are positioned toward ground clips.
- Assemble washer/wiper switch, washer/wiper shaft and switch cover. Assemble speed control switch, hider disc and knob. Place washer/wiper switch into lock housing. Feed wires through lock housing and shift housing.
- Install dimmer switch actuator rod through housings and into washer/wiper switch pocket. Compress dimmer switch until 2 .093" drill shanks can be inserted into alignment holes. With actuator rod seated into dimmer switch and washer/wiper switch pockets, apply a slight upward pressure and connect dimmer switch to its bracket. Remove drill shanks.
- Install turn signal lever cover. Install breakaway capsules. Install wiring trough in place over wires. Install new retainers, if required.
