Failure To Start Test

CAUTION: Perform IGNITION SYSTEM SPARK TEST first. Failure to do so may result in lost diagnostic time or incorrect test results.
  1. Determine that sufficient battery voltage is present for cranking and ignition systems (12.4 volts). Crank engine for 5 seconds while monitoring voltage at coil positive terminal. If coil voltage remains near zero during entire period of cranking, see appropriate article in COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS section.
  2. If voltage is close to battery voltage and drops to zero after 1-2 seconds of cranking, see NO START TEST in appropriate article in COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS section.
  3. If voltage remains close to battery voltage during the entire 5 seconds, turn ignition off. Remove 60-pin connector from SBEC. Check 60-pin connector for spread or loose terminals. Remove lead from positive terminal of ignition coil. Install a jumper wire between battery positive terminal and positive terminal of coil.
  4. Using a jumper wire with a .33 microfarad capacitor, momentarily ground terminal No. 19 of 60-pin connector. See Fig 2 and Fig 3. A spark should be generated when ground is removed.

  5. If spark is generated, replace SBEC. If no spark is generated, use jumper wire with capacitor to ground negative coil terminal. If spark is generated, repair wiring harness for open condition. If no spark is produced, replace ignition coil.
