Magnetic Pick-Up Assembly
The magnetic pick-up assemblies are located inside the distributor. All 2-Bbl. models use one pick-up coil assembly, a run pick-up coil assembly. All models with 4-Bbl. carburetor use 2 pick-up coils, a start pick-up coil and a run pick-up coil. The dual pick-up coils operate as follows:
- "Start" Pick-Up Coil (4-Bbl.) - Supplies a signal to SCC which will cause the spark plugs to fire at a fixed amount of advance during cranking only. This coil is permanently positioned in distributor and the amount of advance will be determined by distributor position. See Fig 1 .
- "Run" Pick-Up Coil (2-Bbl. & 4-Bbl.) - On 2-Bbl. models, the "Run" pick-up coil is the only pick-up coil used. This pick -up coil starts and runs the engine. Timing is controlled by the computer, based upon information received by the data sensors.
On 4-Bbl. models, once engine begins to run, the start pick-up coil signal is by-passed and the run pick-up coil supplies advance information to SCC. See Fig 1 . The SCC then modifies ignition timing advance to reflect engine operating conditions reported by the other sensors.
