Testing (With Tool C-3829-A)
When using Rectifier Tool, it is not necessary to disconnect stator leads. Separate rectifier end shield and rotor assembly.
NOTE:
DO NOT
break plastic cases of rectifiers. Cases are protection against corrosion. Always touch test probe to metal pin nearest rectifier.
- Place rectifier end shield and stator on insulated surface. Connect test lead to alternator "BAT" output terminal. Plug Rectifier Tool C-3829-A into A/C power supply. Touch metal pin of each positive rectifier with test lead.
- Reading should be 1 3/4 amperes or more. Reading should be the same for all rectifiers. Needle should move in the same direction. Good rectifiers will read low when there is a bad rectifier. Bad rectifiers will read zero. Disconnect bad rectifiers.
- When one rectifier reads one ampere, rectifier is open. Other rectifiers will read normal. If negative rectifier is shorted, remove stator from rectifier and retest. Stator windings can ground to stator laminations or rectifier end shield.
