Warm Dr12 - A/C Idle Up System

  1. Connect tachometer to engine. Turn off all lights and accessories. Set temperature selector switch to coldest position. Start engine and allow idle speed to stabilize. Push A/C button. Watch for movement of idle up vacuum diaphragm plunger, while A/C compressor clutch is engaged. Diaphragm plunger should move and increase idle RPM to specifications while A/C compressor clutch is engaged.
  2. With engine running and A/C still on, remove vacuum hose from A/C idle up vacuum diaphragm. Connect vacuum gauge. Reading should be at least 10 in. Hg when the A/C clutch is engaged and zero when the clutch is disengaged. If vacuum is okay, replace idle up vacuum diaphragm. If vacuum is present all the time, replace idle up vacuum solenoid. If there is no vacuum, check vacuum supply, if okay proceed to next step.

NOTE: A/C clutch cycles on and off. Make sure it is on when doing this check. If A/C clutch does not engage, do not proceed with test until necessary repairs are made.

If RPM increases, proceed to WARM DR13. If plunger moves but speed increase is not to specifications, adjust idle speed. If there is no plunger movement, proceed to next step.

  3. Remove connector from idle up vacuum solenoid. Reconnect Blue wire to either solenoid terminal. Connect jumper wire between open terminal of solenoid to ground. Watch vacuum gauge while A/C clutch is engaged. Vacuum gauge should read at least 10 in. Hg when the clutch is engaged. If vacuum is okay, on systems without oxygen feedback, repair Green wire to solenoid for open circuit. On systems with oxygen feedback, proceed to step 5). If no vacuum is present, proceed to next step.

  4. Remove connector from idle up vacuum solenoid. Connect voltmeter between Blue wire of connector and ground. With A/C clutch engaged, voltmeter should read within one volt of battery voltage. If voltage is okay, replace idle up solenoid. If voltage is not okay, repair Blue wire for open circuit.
NOTE: California passenger cars and trucks have a diode in this wire. Check diode.

  5. If vacuum is okay from step 3), for vehicles with oxygen feedback system. Turn engine off. Disconnect connector from idle up vacuum solenoid and 7-way connector from ECU. Connect ohmmeter between cavity No. 3 of ECU 7-way connector and Green wire of solenoid connector. If ohmmeter shows continuity, replace ECU. If there is no continuity, repair wire for open circuit.
