Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering
An inaccurate or not centered steering angle sensor could limit the operation of the electric power steering and may result in personal injury.
The GDS2 calibration software must be updated to the latest diagnostic package for the scan tool Reset and Learn functions to work correctly.
Steering Wheel Angle Centering must be done with the steering wheel in the position that causes straight vehicle motion. If the Steering Wheel Angle is more than 10 degrees out, an alignment must be done first.
The steering angle sensor is internal to the Electronic Power Steering (EPS). Centering of the steering angle sensor might be required after certain service procedures are performed. Do not perform the Steering Wheel Position Sensor Centering unless directed by another service procedure. Some of these procedures are as follows:
- Wheel alignment
- Steering gear replacement
- Steering column replacement
- Collision or other physical damage
The steering angle sensor centering procedure can be completed with a scan tool using the following steps:
- Using the steering wheel, align the front wheels forward.
- Apply the parking brake, or set the transmission in the Park position.
- Install the scan tool to the data link connector.
- Ignition ON/Vehicle in Service Mode
- Select Steering Wheel Angle Sensor Offset Calibration in the K43A Power Steering Control Module 1/K43 Power Steering Control Module Configuration/Reset Functions list.
- Follow the scan tool directions to complete the Centering procedure.
- Select Power Steering Active Pull/Drift Compensation Learn in the K43A Power Steering Control Module 1/K43 Power Steering Control Module Configuration/Reset Functions list.
- Select Steering Wheel Angle Sensor Offset Calibration in the K160 Brake System Control Module Configuration/Reset Functions list.
- Follow the scan tool directions to complete the learn procedure.
- If equipped with RPO UKL, select Steering Wheel Angle Sensor Offset Calibration in the K124AA Image Processing Module - Processor 1 Configuration/Reset Functions list.
- If equipped with RPO UKL, follow the scan tool directions to complete the learn procedure.
- Clear any DTCs that may be set.
