Pierce Probing

NOTE:

Pierce Probing can not be performed on the following restricted circuits:

  • Wires smaller than 0.35mm 2 or 22 ga
  • Wires larger than 4.0 mm 2 or 12 ga
  • High Voltage Cables - single cable and shielded type
  • SRS - Inflatable Restraint System Circuits
  • HO2S - O2 Sensor Circuits
  • Ribbon Cable Circuits
  • Ethernet cables (UTP, JUTP, STP) circuits
  • A2B Cables / Circuits - Automotive Audio Bus (JUTP)
  • Any Internally Sheathed Cables / Circuits
  • Coax Cables
  • Fiber Optic Circuits (POF - plastic optical fiber) and Glass Fiber

With Oscilloscope Diagnostic Kit

  1. Ignition / vehicle OFF
  2. Connect the Special Tool: CH-51450-A  Oscilloscope Diagnostic Kit & Special Tool: CH-51450-LEAD-A  Oscilloscope Basic Lead Kit into the appropriate locations:
    • Blue lead = Channel A of the Oscilloscope
    • Black ground connection = Ground
  3. Identify the section of harness to be probed.
  4. Open the wiring harness loom using a seem ripper to allow access to the desired circuit.
  5. Clip the pierce probe to the desired circuit for testing.
  6. Select Connect Detect on the tool
  7. Turn the pierce probe adjustment knob clockwise and verify Connect Detect = Green
    • If Connect Detect does not = Green 

      Adjust the connection until Connect Detect = Green

    • Go to next step: If Connect Detect = Green 
  8. Collect voltage sample.
  9. Once testing is complete, mark the wire on either side of the probe.
  10. Remove the pierce probe from the wire.
  11. Repair the damaged insulation between the marks. Refer to: Repairing Damaged Wire Insulation 

Without Oscilloscope Diagnostic Kit

  1. Ignition / vehicle OFF
  2. Identify the section of harness to be probed.
  3. Open the wiring harness loom using a seem ripper to allow access to the desired circuit.
  4. Connect the pierce probe from CH-51450-PROBE  to a DMM.
  5. Clip the pierce probe to the desired circuit for testing and connect the other lead of the DMM to the end of the circuit.
  6. Test for less than 5 Ω while adjusting the knob on the pierce probe.
    • If greater than 5 Ω 

      Adjust the connection until less than 5 Ω is measured

    • Go to next step: If less than 5 Ω 
  7. Collect voltage sample.
  8. Once testing is complete, mark the wire on either side of the probe.
  9. Remove the pierce probe from the wire.
  10. Repair the damaged insulation between the marks. Refer to: Repairing Damaged Wire Insulation
