Removal Procedure

  1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight ahead position and lock it in place.
    CAUTION:

    With wheels of the vehicle facing straight ahead, secure the steering wheel utilizing steering column anti-rotation pin, steering column lock or a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:

    • The steering column
    • The intermediate shaft(s)
    • The steering gear

    After disconnecting these components, do not rotate the steering wheel or move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow this procedure may cause the SIR coil assembly to become un-centered and cause possible damage to the SIR coil. If you think the SIR coil has become un-centered, refer to your specific SIR coil's centering procedure to re-center SIR Coil.

  2. Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement .
  3. Remove the steering column dash seal. Refer to Steering Column Dash Inner Seal Replacement .
  4. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  5. Remove both of the front bumper fascia opening lower covers. Refer to Front Bumper Fascia Opening Lower Cover Replacement .
  6. Remove the front compartment insulator. Refer to Front Compartment Insulator Replacement .
  7. Remove the exhaust muffler. Refer to Exhaust Muffler Replacement (L5Q)Exhaust Muffler Replacement (LV7) .
  8. Disconnect both of the steering gear tie rod ends. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement .
  9. Disconnect both of the stabilizer shaft links from the struts. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement .
  10. Disconnect both of the control arm ball joints from the steering knuckles. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement .
  11. Disconnect the transmission rear mount from the transmission rear mount bracket. Refer to Transmission Rear Mount Replacement .
  12. Support the cradle using the hydraulic jack.
  13. Release the cradle front bolts about 10 mm and remove the cradle bracket bolts and the cradle rear bolts. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Cradle Replacement .
  14. Lower the rear portion of cradle about 300 mm.
  15. Remove the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement .
  16. Remove the steering gear bolts (1), washers (2) and nuts (3).

  17. Remove the steering gear (4) from the cradle.
