K20 Engine Control Module: Scan Tool Information

The Engine Control Module Scan Tool Data List contains all engine related parameters that are available on the scan tool. The list is arranged in alphabetical order. A given parameter may appear in any one of the data lists, and in some cases may appear more than once, or in more than one data list in order to group certain related parameters together.

Use the Engine Scan Tool Data List only after the following is determined:

The scan tool values from a properly running engine may be used for comparison with the engine you are diagnosing. The Engine Scan Tool Data List represents values that may be seen on a normally running engine.

Only the parameters listed below are referenced in this service information for use in diagnosis. If all values are within the typical range described below, refer to Symptoms - Engine Controls , for engine diagnosis.

A/C Request Signal A/C ON On This parameter displays the state of the A/C request input to the control module from the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) controls.
Air/Fuel Diagnostic Monitor 1 Ignition ON Incomplete/Complete DTC P219A self-diagnosis is Incomplete/Complete
Air/Fuel Diagnostic Monitor 2 Ignition ON Not present/Present DTC P219A self-diagnosis is on standby or under diagnosis.
Air/Fuel Equivalence Ratio Command - Varies This parameter displays the ratio of air to fuel as calculated by the control module based on various sensor inputs. The scan tool will display a lower air fuel ratio when a richer air to fuel mixture is commanded. The scan tool will display a higher air fuel ratio when a leaner air to fuel mixture is commanded. In closed loop operation the air fuel ratio should normally be approximately 14.7 to 1.
Air/Fuel Ratio Correction Factor - Varies The mean value of the air-fuel ratio feedback correction factor per cycle is indicated.
APP Sensor 1 Accelerator pedal not actuated 0.6 - 0.9 V This parameter displays the actual voltage on the accelerator pedal position (APP) Sensor 1 signal circuit as measured by the control module.
Accelerator pedal fully actuated 4.0 - 4.8 V
APP Sensor 2 Accelerator pedal not actuated 0.6 - 0.9 V This parameter displays the actual voltage on the accelerator pedal position (APP) Sensor 2 signal circuit as measured by the control module.
Accelerator pedal fully actuated 4.0 - 4.8 V

2600 - 3500 mV The signal voltage of the battery current sensor is displayed.
Base Injector Fuel Rate Engine running ms The mean value of the air-fuel ratio feed-back correction factor per cycle is indicated.
Brake Pedal Position Circuit Signal - Applied/Released Indicates condition of brake pedal.
Brake Pedal Switch 1 Status Ignition On Off/On Indicates On/Off condition from ASCD brake switch signal.
Brake Pedal Switch 1 Status Ignition On Off/On Indicates On/Off condition from ASCD brake switch signal.
Brake Pedal Switch 2 Status Ignition On Off/On Indicates On/Off condition from stop lamp switch signal.
Calculated Air Flow Engine at Idle, no load 10 - 35 % Calculated load value indicates the value of the current airflow divided by peak airflow.
Engine speed at 2500 RPM, no load 10 - 35 %
Catalyst Monitor Complete - Complete/Incomplete This parameter indicates the status of the Catalyst. The scan tool displays YES when the diagnostic is complete. And NO if the diagnostic has not run, or a malfunction is detected in the catalyst.
Cooling Fan Speed - Hi/Mid/Low/Off Indicates the condition of the cooling fan (determined by the ECM according to the input signals).
Crankshaft Position Active Counter - Counts Indicates crank position sensor pulse counts.
Cruise Control Low Speed Shut-Off - Active/Inactive Indicates the vehicle cruise condition.
Cruise Control Cancel Switch - On/Off Indicates (On/Off) condition from SET/COAST switch signal.
Cruise Control Main Indicator Command - On/Off Indicates (On/Off) condition of the cruise lamp determined by the ECM according to the input signal.
Cruise Control Requesting Transmission Overdrive Inhibit - On/Off Indicates (On/Off) condition of A/T O/D cancel request signal.
Cruise Control Resume/Acceleration Switch - On/Off Indicates (On/Off) condition from Resume/Acceleration Switch signal.
Cruise Control Set Switch - On/Off Indicates (On/Off) condition of SET/COAST switch signal.
Cruise Control Switch - On/Off Indicates (On/Off) condition of MAIN switch signal.
Cruise Control Vehicle Speed Versus Set Speed Shut-Off - Inactive/Active Indicates the vehicle cruise condition.
Distance with MIL On - km/h (mph) This parameter displays the distance accumulated while MIL is activated.

Indicates the engine speed computed from the signal of the crankshaft position sensor (POS) and camshaft position sensor (PHASE).
EVAP Monitor Complete - Complete/Incomplete This parameter displays if the most recent evaporative emissions diagnostic test is complete.
EVAP Monitor Enabled - Yes/No Indicates the ready condition of EVAP leak diagnosis.
EVAP Purge Solenoid Valve Command - %

Indicates the EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve control value computed by the ECM according to the input signals. The opening becomes larger as the value increases.
EVAP Vent Solenoid Valve Command - On/Off The control condition of the EVAP canister vent control valve (determined by the ECM according to the input signals) is indicated.
Fuel Level Sensor - Volts The signal voltage of the fuel level sensor is displayed.
Fuel Pump Relay Command - On/Off Indicates the fuel pump relay control condition determined by the ECM according to the input signals.
Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor - Volts The signal voltage of the EVAP control system pressure sensor is displayed.
Fuel Temperature Sensor Ignition On °C (°F) The fuel temperature (determined by the signal voltage of the fuel tank temperature sensor) is displayed.
Heavy Electrical Load Ignition On On/Off Indicates (On/Off) condition from the electrical load signal.
HO2S 1 Engine at operating temperature.
Engine speed is 2000 RPM
Fluctuates around 2.2 V The HO2S signal computed from the input signal of the air fuel ratio HO2S 1 is displayed.
HO2S 1 Diagnostic Monitor 1 - Complete/Incomplete Indicates DTC P015A or P015B self-diagnosis condition.
HO2S 1 Diagnostic Monitor 2 - Complete/Incomplete Indicates DTC P014C or P014D self-diagnosis condition.
HO2S 1 Diagnostic Monitor 3 - Absent/Present Indicates DTC P014C, P014D, P015A, or P015B self-diagnosis condition.
HO2S 1 Heater Command Engine speed at idle 4 - 100 % HO2S 1 heater control value computed by the ECM according to the input signals. The current flow to the heater becomes larger as the value increases.
HO2S 1 Heater Command - On/Off This parameter display the state of the HO2S heater control circuit as commanded by the control module.
HO2S 2 Engine at operating temperature Volts

The signal voltage of the HO2S 2 is displayed.
HO2S 2 Diagnostic Monitor 1 - Complete/Incomplete Indicates DTC P0139 self-diagnosis (delayed response) condition.
HO2S 2 Diagnostic Monitor 2 - Complete/Incomplete Indicates DTC P0139 self-diagnosis (slow response) condition.
HO2S 2 Heater Command - On/Off Indicates (On/Off) condition of HO2S 2 heater determined by the ECM according to the in put signal.
HO2S 2 Heater Monitor complete - Complete/Incomplete This parameter displays the current state of the H02S 2 heater monitor.
HVAC Fan Request Signal Engine at operating temperature
Engine Speed at idle
On/Off Indicates (On/Off) condition from the heater fan switch signal.
IAT Sensor - -39 to +140°C (-38 to +284°F) This parameter displays the temperature of the air entering the air induction system based on input to the control module from the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor.
Ignition 1 Signal - On/Off Indicates (On/Off) condition from ignition switch signal.
Ignition Timing Engine speed at idle, no load 1 - 11 ° BTDC Indicates the ignition timing computed by the ECM according to the input signals.
Engine speed 2000 RPM, no load 25 - 45 ° BTDC
Injector Duty Cycle Engine at operating temperature

2.0 - 3.0 ms Indicates the actual fuel injection pulse width compensated by the ECM according to the input signals.

1.0 - 4.0 g/s Indicates the mass airflow computed by the ECM according to the signal voltage of the mass airflow sensor.

O2S/HO2S Monitor Complete - Complete/Incomplete This parameter displays the enable and completion status during the current driving/monitoring cycle of each continuous legislated emission related monitor and non continuous legislated emission related monitor.
Park/Neutral Position Switch Ignition On Park/Neutral/In Gear This parameter indicates the range selection of the automatic transmission as calculated by the control module based on input from the PNP switch. The scan tool will display, In Gear, Park, or Neutral depending on the PNP switch position.
Power Steering Switch - On/Off Indicates (On/Off) condition from the electrical load signal.
Starter Relay Command - On/Off Indicates start signal status (On/Off) computed by the ECM according to the signals of the engine speed and battery voltage.
Throttle Plate at idle Position Ignition On Yes/No Indicates idle position (On/Off) computed by the ECM according to the accelerator pedal position sensor signal.
Throttle Position Learn - Complete/Incomplete Display the condition of idle Air Volume Learning.
Throttle Position Sensor 1 Ignition On/Accelerator pedal fully released Greater than 0.36 V The throttle position sensor signal voltage is displayed.
Ignition On/Accelerator pedal fully depressed Less than 4.75 V
Throttle Position Sensor 2 Ignition On/Accelerator pedal fully released Greater than 0.36 V The throttle position sensor signal voltage is displayed.
Ignition On/Accelerator pedal fully depressed Less than 4.75 V
Transmission in Overdrive Ignition On On/Off Indicates (On/Off) condition of A/T O/D according to the input signal from the TCM.
Transmission Input Speed Vehicle speed greater than 20 km/h (mph) RPM Indicates the engine speed computed from the input speed sensor signal.
Vehicle Speed Sensor - 0 km/h (0 MPH) This parameter displays the speed of the vehicle as calculated by the transmission control module (TCM) from information received from the vehicle speed sensor (VSS).
Engine Control Module (ECM) Scan Tool Output Controls

Output Control Description
Cooling Fan Select Low, Medium, or High speed on the Scan Tool Screen. The scan tool initiates the test when the following conditions are met:
  • Engine coolant temperature is not out of range
  • Ignition switch is in Run position.
Cylinder Power Balance This function is used to cut off each fuel injector signal one at a time using the Scan Tool. The scan tool initiates the test when the following conditions are met:
  • Engine coolant temperature is not out of range
  • Ignition switch is in Run/Crank.
  • A/C switch is Off.
Engine Coolant Temperature This function is used to Decrease or Increase the signal from the ECT sensor.
EVAP Purge Solenoid Valve This function is used to change the EVAP canister purge volume control solenoid valve opening percent using the Scan Tool. The scan tool indicates the test when the following conditions are met:
  • Engine coolant temperature is not out of range
  • Engine speed is 1500 mph.
EVAP Vent Solenoid Valve This function controls the EVAP vent solenoid. The normal commanded state is none. When commanded ON, the vent valve switches to not venting. When commanded OFF, the vent valve switches to venting. The scan tool indicates the test when the following conditions are met:
  • Ignition On.
Fuel Pump Relay This function controls the fuel pump relay. The normal commanded state is None. When commanded ON or OFF, the ECM turns the fuel pump ON or OFF. The scan tool initiates the test when the following conditions are met:
  • The engine speed is 0 RPM.
  • In the correct power mode.
Fuel Injector Balance This function is used to Increase or Decrease the amount of fuel injection is using. The scan tool initiates the test when the following conditions are met:
  • The engine speed is at idle.
  • In the correct power mode.
Fuel Temperature This function is used to Increase or Decrease the signal from the fuel temperature.
Ignition Timing This function is used to Increase or Decrease the spark retard angle from 0 - 10 degrees.
Intake Camshaft Position Actuator This function controls the selected camshaft actuator solenoid. The normal commanded state is None. The system will increase or decrease the angle of the selected camshaft plus/minus 10 degree increments.
Throttle Position Learn This device control is used to reset the learned airflow adaptive values to their initial values.
