Circuit/System Verification

NOTE:

This diagnostic assumes the following:

  • The battery is completely charged.
  • The engine cranking speed is acceptable.
  • There is adequate fuel in the fuel tank.
  1. Crank the engine for up to 15 seconds
  2. Verify that no DTCs are set.
    • Go to next step: If none of the DTCs are set
  3. Ignition OFF, disconnect the fuel pump relay.
  4. Connect a J 26792  spark tester between the boot of a ignition coil of a cylinder and ground.
  5. NOTE:
    • Perform the spark test on at least 3 of the 4 cylinders.
    • An erratic or weak spark is considered a no spark condition.
  6. Verify the spark tester sparks while cranking the engine.
    • Go to next step: If the spark tester sparks
  7. Install the fuel pump relay.
  8. Ignition ON.
  9. Verify the fuel pump turns ON and OFF when commanding the Fuel Pump Relay ON and OFF with a scan tool.
    • Go to next step: If the fuel pump turns ON and OFF
  10. Ignition OFF, install the J 44321  fuel pressure gauge.
  11. NOTE:
    • The Fuel Pump Relay may need to be commanded ON a few times, in order to obtain the highest possible fuel pressure.
    • Do NOT start the engine for this test.
  12. Ignition ON.
  13. Command the Fuel Pump Relay ON several times with a scan tool.
  14. Verify the fuel pressure is between 345 - 414 kPa (50 - 60 psi) with the fuel pump running.
    • Go to next step: If within the specified range
  15. Verify the fuel pressure does not decrease greater than 34 kPa (5 psi) in 1 minute.
    • Go to next step: If within the specified range
  16. Verify none of the conditions listed below exist:
    • Collapsed air intake duct to the throttle body
    • Air filter element restricted
    • Spark plugs gas or coolant fouled.
    • Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor skewed - Refer to Temperature Versus Resistance (Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor) .
    • Exhaust system restricted
    • Fuel contaminated or poor quality - Refer to Alcohol/Contaminants-in-Fuel Diagnosis .
    • Engine mechanical condition, for example, worn timing chain and sprockets or low compression - Refer to Symptoms, Engine Mechanical.
      • If a condition exists

        Repair as necessary.

      • Go to next step: If no conditions exist
  17. All OK
