Installation Procedure

    CAUTION: When servicing the steering column, the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System clock spring must be centered for proper steering wheel operation. Failure to properly center the SIR clock spring may result in reduced turnability of the steering wheel causing the vehicle to improperly maneuver and may cause the SIR system to be inoperative.
  1. Install the clock spring from the steering shaft.
  2. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  3. Install new mounting screws.

    Tighten:  Tighten the clock spring screws to 3 N.m (27 lb in)  .

  4. Connect the driver air bag, horn, and connectors to the lower steering column.
  5. Install the driver side knee bolster or instrument panel lower cover.
  6. Install the upper and lower steering column covers and screws.
  7. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement (Without SIR) or Steering Wheel Replacement (With SIR) in Steering Wheel and Column.
  8. Install the driver air bag. Refer to Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Replacement (1.6/1.8L) .
  9. Inspect the alignment of the clock spring. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Centering in Steering Wheel and Column.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
