Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Saturn Sky. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
    IMPORTANT: The differential is shipped with a plastic vent plug. Remove the plastic vent plug prior to differential vent installation.
  1. When replacing the differential. remove the plastic vent plug and install a new differential vent.

    The vent flange must be fully seated.

  2. If reusing the wheel drive shafts remove and discard the wheel drive shaft retaining rings.

    The wheel drive shaft retaining rings are on the splined shaft of the inner tripod housing.

  3. Install the new wheel drive shaft retaining rings.
  4. With the differential firmly attached to the jack, raise the differential to the vehicle.

  6. Hand install the differential carrier bracket-to-frame bolt (1) in order to locate the differential to the rear support.

  8. With the differential firmly attached to the jack, raise the differential to the rear support.
  9. Position the differential to the support.

  11. Hand install the left differential rear mounting bolt (1).

    NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice .
  13. Hand install the right differential rear mounting bolt (1).

    Tighten: 

    • Tighten the differential rear mounting bolts to 175 N.m (129 lb ft).
    • Tighten the differential carrier bracket-to-frame bolt to 175 N.m (129 lb ft).

  15. Remove the transmission jack.
  16. Install propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement .
  17. Install the wheel drive shafts. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement .
  18. Install the rear tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  19. Inspect the differential lubricant level. Refer to Rear Axle Lubricant Level Inspection .
  20. Lower the vehicle.
