Fuel System Pressure Release

WARNING: Remove the fuel tank cap and relieve the fuel system pressure before servicing the fuel system in order to reduce the risk of personal injury. After you relieve the fuel system pressure, a small amount of fuel may be released when servicing the fuel lines, the fuel injection pump, or the connections. In order to reduce the risk of personal injury, cover the fuel system components with a shop towel before disconnection. This will catch any fuel that may leak out. Place the towel in an approved container when the disconnection is complete.
CAUTION: Do not perform this test for more than 2 minutes in order to prevent damaging the catalytic converter.

Turn ignition off. Loosen fuel filler cap to relieve fuel tank pressure. Remove fuel pump relay from the junction box. Junction box is located above left side hinge pillar trim panel. See Fig 1. Crank the engine. Allow the engine to start and stall. Crank the engine for an additional 3 seconds to ensure the relieve of any remaining fuel pressure. Disconnect the negative battery cable in order to avoid repressurizing the fuel system. Install the fuel pump relay to the junction box. Tighten the fuel filler cap.
