Test C: Charge Indicator Light Inoperative
- Check generator mounting. Check wiring harness electrical connections at generator. Check battery cables. Check drive belt tension. Ensure battery is fully charged. See BATTERY TESTING & INSPECTION under ON-VEHICLE TESTING. Reviewing the description and operation information will help determine the correct symptom diagnostic procedure when a malfunction exists and will also help determine if the condition described by the customer is normal operation. See DESCRIPTION & OPERATION . If review was performed, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If battery charge indicator light illuminates during 5-second bulb check, problem is intermittent. Check wiring and connections. If battery charge indicator light does not illuminate during 5-second bulb check, go to next step.
- Turn ignition switch to LOCK position. Disconnect generator harness connector. Connect a 20-amp fused jumper wire between ground and White/Red wire at generator harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If battery charge indicator lamp does not illuminate, go to step 6 . If battery charge indicator lamp illuminates, go to next step.
- Check for an open in Black/White wire between generator and junction box. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS and WIRING DIAGRAMS . If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step 9 . If problem does not exist, go to next step.
- Replace generator. See GENERATOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step 9 .
- Inspect charge indicator bulb. Check for an open in Black/White wire between junction box and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step 9 . If problem does not exist, go to next step.
- Check for an open in White/Red wire between instrument cluster and generator. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If problem exists, repair as necessary and go to step 9 . If problem does not exist, go to next step.
- Repair or replace instrument cluster printed circuit. See appropriate ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. After repairs, go to next step.
- Operate system to verify repair. If condition was found and corrected, system is okay. If condition was not found, go to step 2 .
